    Happy April from TheArtList.com!

We apologize for the slight delay in getting out this month's newsletter... we had a scheduling misstep and the newsletter was not sent as originally planned, so here we go again.

I hope that you are all finally getting spring fever. Spring is such a great time of the year for re-engaging the creative spirit within and setting goals for the rest of the year.

On a family vacation in Florida a week or so ago, I had the opportunity to attend a small art fair and talk to many artists who were exhibiting their work. Although it was small, there were artists from all around the country and all seemed to feel good about their prospects even in a slow economy. One artist told me that she had recently been selected as one of ten U.S. artists to receive an all-expenses paid trip to showcase her artwork in the 2009 Kobe Biennale in Kobe, Japan in October. Another visiting artist that I met in a local gallery had sold over $30k in that week alone. These are all promising indicators that you can still succeed as an artist in a down economy and we are seeing lots of art calls and opportunity submissions worthy of checking out. So be sure to login to your account and check often.

    Online Art Predators?

Here at TheArtList.com we are always getting asked by members how to tell if an Art Call or website is legitimate and worthy of submitting to. In our experience, we do see some blatant scams in the online art world and we do our best to weed out any Art Calls that sound really fishy. That said, we do post a wide variety of Art Opportunity announcements from the largest International Juried Art Shows to the smallest online art contests, and we always recommend that you do your full due diligence before submitting to any Art Call to make sure that it really is worth your time and money to enter.

What we are not saying is to only hold out for the large, most prestigious calls as they can be quite competitive and there are many great smaller, local, and/or online competitions worthy of entering to help you raise exposure of your work in the art world. We had one Premium Member who last year entered over 100 national competitions and was accepted and placed by almost 30. Wow!

Back to the issue of online art scams, I recently came across a blog post by our good friend Clint Watson over at FineArtViews.com entitled: "How to Avoid Online Artist Predators". It is a good read and although might be more written about the rise of online art gallery sites, I feel it has some important advice for all artists and can also be applied to entering art contests. Read Clint's blog post: http://clintwatson.net/blog/9908
