“The world is full enough of hurts and mischances without wars to multiply them.”
– J.R.R. Tolkien
Welcome to March, Artists and Art Lovers. Here at TheArtList we try to stick to what we know in these newsletters, which is, of course, art. With that said, recent worldwide events cannot be ignored. ARTIST OF THE MONTH WINNER
Gloria Chan is a Chinese-American artist from Atlanta, Georgia. She specializes in drawing, watercolors, and oil paints. She recently developed a new "possibility on traditional art", by combining an Ultraviolet effect with traditional mediums for what she calls a "Double Lighting Effect". Within one painting, there are two different images. One can be easily seen with regular lighting, and the other requires ultraviolet
lighting to be viewed. Read more about Gloria and see more of her beautiful work on our Featured Artist of the Month page: https://www.theartlist.com/featured-artists/2022-gloria-chan
SECOND PLACE WINNER
John Boudreau is originally from Massachusetts. He studied fine art in New York City and currently lives in Los Angeles where he works as an artist and an art instructor at a mental health wellness center. He also teaches art to older adults who are residents at a bridge housing unit. John lived for many years in the Arts District neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. He was an active part of the community participating in art festivals and events.
His artwork has been included in several exhibitions that bring awareness to global issues and also for charity fundraisers. See more cool pieces from John here: https://www.johnboudreau-artist.com/
THIRD PLACE WINNER
Stephen Murphy is a photographer from Evanston, Illinois. He graduated from the Pratt Institute and the University of Chicago, and is ABT from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Advanced Visual Studies. Stephen was also the chair of the art department of New Trier High School, where he taught photography. Until the pandemic he was a visiting artist at Walter Payton College Prep for three years. He has exhibited his art both nationally and internationally. See more of Stephen's
amazing work here: https://www.murphdawg49.photos/
VIEWER'S CHOICE
Annette Whimsies is a multi media artist from Colorado. She got hooked on creating, exploring and showing artwork after she won her first art show ribbon in elementary school. She's explored art in architectural drawing, digital media, mural work, ceramics, graphic design, photography, videography, animation, fabric creations, quilting, dolls, stuff animals, crochet, knitting, fiber art and
reworking vintage items. Annette is a published author, a professional photographer, a crafter of whimsical gifts and a gallery artist. See more of Annette's awesome art here: https://annetteswhimsies.art/

PH21 Gallery presents: Monochrome – A Curated International Photography Exhibition
Monochrome photography is usually associated with black and white images. However, in the history of photography other hues, such as sepia and cyan were also used, and today there are countless examples of monochromatic images whose photographic qualities are based on the tonal range of various other colours. While monochromacity used to be a technological limitation for a long time, today it is more of an artistic choice. Photographers may opt for working with the shades of just one
colour for compositional reasons or for reasons related to the expressive content of their images, and therefore their decision is to be interpreted. Our appreciation of contemporary monochromatic images is also rooted in the knowledge that the lack of colour range is significant and meaningful, not merely a technological limitation. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Monochrome. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who create
black and white or other monochromatic images and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. We welcome submissions from all photographic genres, including abstract compositions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

The Chateau Gallery - The Absurd
While the word is currently used to refer to a kind of dry, ironic situation, The Absurd has a rich philosophical tradition most closely associated with the writings of Albert Camus. What are we to do with the question of life’s meaning, especially in the face of its persistent unanswerability? Camus says that “one must imagine Sisyphus happy,” but this is no simple task. In modern times, it seems we can find countless echoes of the loop Sisyphus is stuck in, from the eternal scroll of
social media to the endless stream of new variants and vaccines; how do you access the repetitions of our lives where meaning escapes our grasp, and The Absurd is all that remains?

PH21 Gallery presents: Stories: Narrative Photography – A Curated International Photography Exhibition
While photography is popularly associated with capturing the moment, it has always been a sensitive medium of storytelling as well. Looking at a photograph may allow for understanding much about the past that has led up to the moment frozen in time; it may also enable the viewer to imagine the possible future unfolding of events that may evolve from the still record of the here and now. Photographers portraying people, objects, and places can tell us inspiring stories, provided we take the
time to study and interpret the images. A narrative told in a single photograph is an exciting challenge for both photographer and viewer alike. Hopefully we appreciate these works with the care and curiosity they deserve. Encouraged by the success of our previous Stories exhibitions, this year PH21 Gallery invites photographers again to submit their work for our annual group exhibition themed Stories: Narrative Photography. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who think that
their work is telling a story and would like to share it with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; it may be expressed visually on personal or social levels, literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Stories can be told about persons, communities, objects, and places as well. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

PH21 Gallery presents: The art of photography – Barcelona – A Curated International Photography Exhibition
Although photography first emerged as a technological invention, it was also quickly conceived as an artistic practice as well. Pictorialist photographs in the nineteenth century were created to look like paintings, while advocates of straight photography in the first part of the twentieth century strived for the purely photographic means of creating photographic meaning. Street photographers devoted the medium to capturing the fleeting moment, while in the last part of the twentieth
century many photographers turned to staging and directing in order to utilize photography for artistic visual communication. Art photography also includes numerous genres and creative practices from portraiture, landscape and still life to abstract and conceptual photography. In this call we ask contemporary photographers to show how they understand photography as a fine art practice in the twenty first century. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition
themed The art of photography. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in photography as an art form and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; we welcome submissions from all artistic photographic genres and styles, including abstract compositions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of what photography as an art form might
be.

This exhibition will take place in our Main Gallery and will be open to the public June 10 - August 28, 2022. See prospectus link below for details. 'I’ll Be There' invites
artists who think critically and deeply about the meaning of love in our culture. In the realm of our romantic lives, self-love, in our families, spiritual love, and love between friends, it is obvious that love informs our decisions and can strengthen our understanding of our communities. “Yet when we commit to true love, we are committed to being changed, to being acted upon by the beloved in a way that enables us to be more fully self-actualized. This commitment to change is chosen. It
happens by mutual agreement.” – bell hooks
