Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts, and the tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways by which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception; numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. Today we live in an exciting new era for portraiture. There has never been a time in human history when so many portraits and self-portraits were produced day after day as in the era of digital technologies. Photographers have responded to the cultural, social and technological changes by reinterpreting the age-old genre of portraiture, and it is always an exciting and rewarding task to organize an exhibition for some of the recent achievements in the field. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Personality: Contemporary Portraiture. DECAY, CORROSION, RUST... “And behind door number 2 – a brand new…….” US television prizes – all about the “new”. Though we often focus on the new and shiny there is amazing beauty in the decayed, the corroded, the rusted and it can make images of those items so much more compelling and interesting. Consider the textures and colors in an abandoned, dilapidated factory or prison, the rust on an old bike, contrasting plaster and lathing on a corroded wall and the myriad of possible captures in a junkyard. Neighborhoods, disparagingly called "run down", are treasure troves of "decayed" tumble down houses, "corroded" discarded toys, "rusted" cars, trash cans and so on. Decay, Corrosion, Rust.... can take many forms; black and white, color, abstract - all photographic media are welcome. As with all NYC4PA calls, all 2D photographic art is accepted. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply because the available film or digital technology has long made colour the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in black and white the same way, or they would not work at all. That they are in colour is not merely a technological given; rather, it is an integral, formative, and significant aspect of their photographic meaning. A Smith Gallery | photographic call for entry "town & country"

Horton Art Gallery - Visions In Clay 2024

National Call for Ceramic Art — Exhibition Juror: Kevin Snipes, Ceramic Artist. Gallery Awards: $1800, San Joaquin Potters Guild Founders Award: $300, Regional Artist Award: $800 (artist to provide ceramic demonstration workshop for Delta College students). Eligibility: Entry is open to artists residing in the U.S. Ceramic works of any thematic and stylistic presentation are accepted for entry. Clay must be the primary medium. Artwork that has been previously exhibited at the Horton Art Gallery is not eligible for entry. Artwork may not exceed 4ft. in any dimension. Gallery Exhibition: August 29 – September 20, 2024, with an online exhibition webpage. Horton Art Gallery is located on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. Visions In Clay was founded by the San Joaquin Potters Guild in 2002, and presented by the Horton Art Gallery since 2010. Visions In Clay is one of the largest ceramic exhibitions in Northern California.
