Happy March from TheArtList!  “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” – Twyla Tharp  It's March, Artists and Art Lovers! Hopefully things are warming up in your neck of the woods (or cooling down, depending on where you are!), and that the coming months will offer you plenty of artistic inspiration. With that in mind, we have some great calls for you, as
well as our Artist of the Month contest winners and honorable mentions, so let's get right to it. Thank you to those who entered for sharing your art with us! Read on to see which artists will be receiving gift certificates from our friends at Jerry's Artarama. This month's contest is live, so submit your art today! For our contests, we kindly request that you submit a link to your artist website or social media page (Instagram is preferred if you don't have a dedicated
website) along with your entry. Otherwise we can't direct our readers to learn more about you or get in touch with you to purchase your art! With that said, as always, we also have a lot of great calls from all over the world, so be sure to check out the full list at the bottom of this newsletter. Â If you haven't done so yet, please check out the blog section on our website. We have some great articles that
we think will be of interest to artists and art lovers alike. This month's article is Why Artists Have Always Kept Notes (and Why You Should Too). There’s a part of the creative process most
people never see. It happens before the work feels clear, before it’s ready to be shared, sometimes before you even know what you’re making yet. It’s the stage where ideas are still loose, uncertain, overlapping, unresolved. Historically, that’s where artists wrote. Today, many artists only write when they have to. An exhibition application is due. A grant requires a statement. A submission portal demands context. Social media posts need captions. So often, writing becomes reactive,
rushed, and disconnected from the work itself. Art history offers a different model. One that’s slower, quieter, and far more sustainable. And don't forget about our ART MARKETING 101 series. It's designed to help both new and experienced artists get the most out of their online portfolios - from choosing the right domain name, to designing a professional-looking portfolio site, photographing your artwork like a pro, and even how to write an artist biography that's both compelling and optimized for SEO. We hope these will be great resources for our readers. We have a lot of other fun articles we hope you will enjoy as well!  If you are a gallery or organization that would like to take advantage of our current discounts to promote your upcoming art contest or event, visit https://www.theartlist.com/submit. As
always, we thank you all -- artists and organizations -- for supporting TheArtList.  --------------------------------  - Please note that we are only able to showcase a small number of calls in the monthly newsletter, so be sure to visit our website www.theartlist.com for more. You can login to search for calls that match your interests.

Now go create some art!  - TheArtList.com Editors Â
ARTIST OF THE MONTH WINNER Hoyt Stover is a Georgia-based artist with a BFA in painting and drawing from Kennesaw State University. He is a realist painter
whose work explores narrative story telling of metal work artists and industrial work through the use of lose brushwork, apotheosis, impasto, and intense lighting. Stover’s work is heavily influenced by compositions and themes from classical art with a blend of contemporary painting aesthetics. Stover has already been included in various important exhibitions including the “GLA Art Auction” at King’s Plow Art Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Read more about Hoyt and see more of his awesome art in our
Featured Artist of the Month page: https://www.theartlist.com/featured-artists/2026-hoyt-stover
SECOND PLACE WINNER Chenyi Xu is an exceptional artist from Fremont, California. A Congressional Art Competition winner for California’s 17th District, Chenyi is a senior at
Irvington High School in Fremont, California, whose work explores contemporary society—celebrating its strengths while thoughtfully questioning its challenges—through carefully rendered portraits and symbolic imagery. Beyond his studio practice, Chenyi founded and leads the Grimmer Elementary Art Class, providing free art education to local students while researching inequities in arts access across California. See more of Chenyi's amazing art here: https://www.instagram.com/little.art.sketchbook
THIRD PLACE WINNER Jose Luis De la Barra Bellido is an accomplished artist born on 6th August 1956 in Peru. He has created a dream-like world through his expressing the internal and external fantasies of his imagination with his precise talents in painting and drawing. The expressions and the sensual
movements that appear in each piece, create mystic allegories about the universe. By combining his interest in the human form with his desire for symbolic content, he has engendered a language that explains the human condition through a unique perspective. There is a method through which he develops his art relying on material and composition to develop his personal, magical universe. De la Barra considers himself a Surrealist, one who plays and exaggerates reality as perceived in this
subjective world. Check out more of Jose's awesome art here: https://www.delabarragallery.com/
VIEWER'S CHOICE Lino Azevedo is an artist from Savannah, Georgia, born in the 1970s to Portuguese immigrants near San Francisco, California. "Like most small children, I
enjoyed creating from the soul with simple tools like pencil and crayon. Being a painter herself, my mother saw the potential and let me try my hand with her oils and brushes. I was hooked and knew even at a young age creating would be a life-long pursuit. After receiving an art award in high school, a counselor suggested San Jose State University for its strong art and design program. After graduating with a bachelors degree in studio art, I began teaching drawing and painting in the Bay area.
It was especially rewarding to guide and support students along their own artistic journeys while I pursued my own. Discovering this newfound passion for mentoring artists, I pursued and obtained my master's degree in painting at Winthrop University. This afforded me the skills needed to teach in schools and universities as well as shaping me into a better artist." See more of Lino's fantastic art here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AzevedoArt

| DEADLINE: March 30, 2026 PH21 Gallery Barcelona presents: "Feminine / Masculine" – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, May 30 – June
23, 2026 Portrayals of femininity and masculinity are, without a doubt, central to numerous art forms, with photography being no exception. The past few decades have sparked often heated discussions and criticisms of past, recent, and current photographic practices due to their lack of reflection on the assumptions, stereotypes, and prejudices surrounding approaches to femininity and masculinity. Both fine art and commercial works have been critiqued for the potential consequences of their
approach and presentation. Historically, femininity and masculinity have been conceived as oppositions, complements to each other, or positions on a continuum, among other perspectives. There are scarcely any ways of portraying femininity and masculinity that would not be considered trivial, conservative, pretentious, demeaning, distasteful, clichéd, or even offensive by some. It often seems that everything has been said and photographed on this subject; however, it is impossible to ignore the
persistence of the theme in our contemporary visual culture. What can we still value and possibly revive from the rich history of photography? Are there any novel ways left to approach this subject with a fresh critical eye? We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in this subject, aiming to showcase their work to a broader international audience through the exposure provided by PH21 Gallery. | DEADLINE: April 27, 2026 PH21 Gallery Barcelona presents: "Motion" – A Curated International
Photography Exhibition, June 27 – July 21, 2026 Photography is a medium of still images; it cannot create the illusion of motion the way moving images such as film, video, or cartoons can. The static nature of the image itself, however, has never prevented photographers from putting motion in the centre of their endeavours. In addition to freezing the moment, they often strive to capture movement and the passing of time in a variety of other ways as well. The fragile moment might be
disrupted by showing the sweeping power of motion. Capturing motion is never a given in photography because it is not a default option of the medium. Depicting or expressing motion is a welcome challenge for photographers; it is also the source of some of the most creative images in diverse photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Motion. We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in this intriguing topic and who
would like to share their work with a wider international audience through exposure at PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed and is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. Website: https://www.ph21gallery.com Prospectus: https://www.ph21gallery.com/cfe-motion-26 |
