Ah, the birds. Uniquely beautiful, ceaselessly fascinating; borne of dinosaur DNA! Elusive and unreachable, except by the camera lens; if ever there was a creature that inspired mankind's collective "compare and despair" mentality, the bird would have to be it. Greek mythology speaks of Icarus and Daedalus, who yearned to fly free of of the earth; Edgar Allen Poe wrote of that pesky raven tap, tap, tapping at his window, and even Jesus asked us to consider the sparrow, who neither sows nor reaps, yet still gets along. Heavy. What is it then about the bird that affects us so? Are they everything we want to ... beautiful, carefree, and, literally, above it all? Do we envy their freedom? Do we project on to them our desire to take wing from the grave cares and pedestrian repetitions of our human-ness, to a far place both wild and beautiful, and a life lived literally "on the fly"? Would that we, like birds, could rise to our potential without care, without responsibility! Unbound by the relic of consistency, or memory of those left behind? Oh! Fickle-feathered fastidious freeloader of heaven and earth, thy name is bird! For the rest of us, wingless, bored and earthbound, photographs of you must suffice! Approximately fifty works will be chosen from submitted photos to be included in the I'LL FLY AWAY: THE NATURE OF BIRDS group photography exhibition at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles.

A juried international photography exhibition. August 25 – September 20, 2016. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply because the available film or digital technology has long turned colour to be the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in black and white the same way; that they are in colour is not merely a technological given, rather, it is an integral, formative and significant aspect of their photographic meaning. We may think of these photographs as colour by significance. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed RGB. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in the significance of any colour in photography and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed, as the significance of colours is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

UP AGAINST THE WALL invites you to forget the pedestal! Let’s put our clay on the map, on the vertical axis, just perfect for a Brooklyn where horizontal space is at such a premium. In New York City, we have to Build UP! Big or small, fat or flat, however it’s hanging. Confrontational clay at it’s most insistent. Exhibit dates: September 24 – October 16, 2016. JUROR: Matt Nolen is a studio artist and is Adjunct Professor of Art at New York University and Pratt Institute. This is a national juried exhibition for artists 18 years of age or older working in clay. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. All work must be handcrafted by the artist from raw clay. Acceptable forms include sculpture, wall hangings and installations. The artwork cannot be functional -- production work and commercially manufactured pieces are not acceptable. Mixed media is acceptable as long as clay is the dominant component of the piece (at least 75%). See size & weight restrictions within prospectus. Early bird submissions – June 23rd - $45 for up to six (6) images. On Time Submissions between June 24th and July 6th -- $55 for submission of up to six (6)images. It is open to amateur and professional photographers around the globe that use a toy camera or an element of it. This is a selling show with art priced for anyone and everyone. Thousands of NY art lovers and collectors will see your work up close and personal. Expand your collector base in NYC. To make it easy for new collectors, all work submitted must be for sale at $499 or less. Every artist selected by our juror can also send in one additional piece of the artist’s choice for the really-really Affordable Art section. TRI AN MONUMENT

The overriding purpose of this monument is to honor and express deep gratitude ('Tri An' in the Vietnamese language) for the millions of Americans and Vietnamese who fought side-by-side to stop communist aggression and tried to give the South Vietnamese people a chance to live in freedom. To give meaning to this struggle, many of the Vietnamese people who fled their country to escape persecution want to show their appreciation for those who helped them during and after the war. The monument was conceived by Yung Nguyen, an immigrant from Viet Nam who became a successful entrepreneur and businessman. The foundation secured a one acre site and will fund and build the selected design. They are sponsoring this competition to help them find the most creative idea. This is an open world-wide competition and anyone with an idea is welcome to submit an entry--artists, sculptors, architects, landscape architects, students, professionals, individuals, teams or firms. The entry fee is $35.00 US for students / $75.00 USD for all others. Each of 3 finalists will receive an award of $4,000 USD each. The Tri An Foundation Directors will then select the final design that best responds to their mission. The winner will be a part of the implementation team. The JURY: SUSAN RADEMACHER, Hon. The CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is given to a North American photographer pursuing work of creative or social importance. While there are other sources for grants and fellowships in photography, the chance to have the editorial, design, production, and marketing support to realize a body of work in print is rare: The prize’s focus is on creating an opportunity for photographers who are engaged in the creation of a continued, active, and vital body of work to publish a first book. Winners of the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography receive a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in a website devoted to presenting the work of the prizewinners. The winner also receives a solo exhibit; the photographs are then placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts in Duke University’s Rubenstein Library. Atelier Progressif Creative Space in Catskill, NY, is interested in pushing the boundaries of digital art and technology. We are soliciting critical essays, film, artwork, design, and process pieces that employ the tools of digital culture. We believe the new generation of artists has a unique perspective as it engages digital culture socially, professionally, creatively, and theoretically. Young thinkers and creators fuel the process of digitization and the subsequent culture erupting from these processes, and many of their decisions will impact the future of our creative perspective. Eligibility: Competition is open to all artists age 18 and over working with digital media. What we want: Audio, multi-media, and new media pieces.
