This Month's Notable Calls...
Happy July from TheArtList.com! ”Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.” ~Steven Pressfield
Summer is in full-swing for the northern hemisphere,
schools out, and vacations are being taken. Growing up, art in all forms was always part of our family vacations. I remember an MC Escher exhibit of his pencil drawings; the erasure marks where he changed his mind or maybe hadn't got something quite right, were clearly visible. What a gift. So often we only see completed works in museums, but seeing the practice pieces, the places where mistakes are made is art in itself.

Artist of The Month Winner
Congratulations to TheArtList.com's July Artist of the Month Grand Prize Winner, Patricia Henderson.
Patricia Henderson is an accomplished collage and mixed media artist from Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada. In 2002, Henderson began painting with watercolours. Her artwork evolved in a new direction when she discovered collage art, or ‘paper paintings’, in 2009. Her first experiment with tearing up and gluing pieces of failed watercolours
led to a love of this jigsaw collage of text, colour, paper, paint and natural subjects. Each piece is a multi-layered story.

Second Place Winner
Leah Wiedemer is our second place winner. She says "In 2003 we took our first trip to Italy and I’ll never be the same. My work is heavily influenced by the Italian landscape,
light, architecture and people. My wanderings can easily be traced by my paintings. Everywhere I go, I find something to captivate my attention and demand to be painted. Whether working plein air or in the studio my goal is to capture the spirit of time and place that inspires me."
Viewer's Choice Award Winner
Congratulations to our
Viewer's Choice Winner for July, Manda Noorzad. Manda was born 1973 in Tehran and has an M.A in communication & public relations. She began painting at the age of 14 and has studied all over the world. Manda says that her work is a picture of modern Persian poetry. Rythm and music in the poetry become motion, colory and lightly in her paintings.

| | DEADLINE JULY 10, 2016 I'll Fly Away: The Nature of Birds Photo Exhibition Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery Ah, the birds. Uniquely beautiful, ceaselessly
fascinating; borne of dinosaur DNA! Elusive and unreachable, except by the camera lens; if ever there was a creature that inspired mankind's collective "compare and despair" mentality, the bird would have to be it. Greek mythology speaks of Icarus and Daedalus, who yearned to fly free of of the earth; Edgar Allen Poe wrote of that pesky raven tap, tap, tapping at his window, and even Jesus asked us to consider the sparrow, who neither sows nor reaps, yet still gets along. Heavy. What is it then
about the bird that affects us so? Are they everything we want to ... beautiful, carefree, and, literally, above it all? Do we envy their freedom? Do we project on to them our desire to take wing from the grave cares and pedestrian repetitions of our human-ness, to a far place both wild and beautiful, and a life lived literally "on the fly"? Would that we, like birds, could rise to our potential without care, without responsibility! Unbound by the relic of consistency, or memory of those left
behind? Oh! Fickle-feathered fastidious freeloader of heaven and earth, thy name is bird! For the rest of us, wingless, bored and earthbound, photographs of you must suffice! Approximately fifty works will be chosen from submitted photos to be included in the I'LL FLY AWAY: THE NATURE OF BIRDS group photography exhibition at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles. | | DEADLINE JULY 18,
2016 PH21 Gallery: Call for Entries - RGB Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery A juried international photography exhibition. August 25 – September 20, 2016. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the
default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply because the available film or digital technology has long turned colour to be the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their
emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in black and white the same way; that they are in colour is not merely a technological given, rather, it is an integral, formative and significant aspect of their photographic meaning. We may think of these photographs as colour by significance. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed RGB. We are looking for submissions from all photographers
who are interested in the significance of any colour in photography and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed, as the significance of colours is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Art Gallery Archaeologist estimate that humans domesticated dogs approximately 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, but it is likely that our interest in and fascination with animals began long before then. Most of us have tried to touch a beautiful bird or hold that furry squirrel. Surveys report that about 62% of American households include a pet. Why do we seek out the companionship of animals? Why do we need to be close to them? What needs do they fulfill?
The jury seeks works that explore the wide world of pets, the role that our faithful companions play in our lives, and the impact that they have on our health and well-being. All media welcome; small to large-scale installations; new media encouraged; indoor and outdoor works accepted; cash awards to be presented. Juror to be announced. | | DEADLINE AUGUST 28, 2016 - $12000 in Awards TRI AN MONUMENT Online Event - Public Art Calls Other The overriding purpose of this monument is to honor and express deep gratitude ('Tri An' in the Vietnamese language) for the millions of Americans and Vietnamese who fought side-by-side to stop communist aggression and tried to give the South Vietnamese
people a chance to live in freedom. To give meaning to this struggle, many of the Vietnamese people who fled their country to escape persecution want to show their appreciation for those who helped them during and after the war. The monument was conceived by Yung Nguyen, an immigrant from Viet Nam who became a successful entrepreneur and businessman. The foundation secured a one acre site and will fund and build the selected design. They are sponsoring this competition to help them find the most
creative idea. This is an open world-wide competition and anyone with an idea is welcome to submit an entry--artists, sculptors, architects, landscape architects, students, professionals, individuals, teams or firms. The entry fee is $35.00 US for students / $75.00 USD for all others. Each of 3 finalists will receive an award of $4,000 USD each.
