September Contest Winners
Artist of The Month Winner

Congratulations to TheArtList.com's September Artist of the Month Grand Prize Winner, Arturo Samniego. Samaniego took a 15-year detour on his way to opening Samaniego Art. Today, he wonders why it took him so long to decide to follow his heart and embrace the life of a fine artist. "From my first art classes at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico when I was a teenager, I knew I wanted to be an artist," Samaniego says. But after obtaining degrees in Art and business from the University of Texas, he put his artistic aspirations on hold to pursue opportunities in the computer hardware business.
“My heart was never in the business world,” he now admits. “I was always frustrated that my artwork came second. I felt I could produce much better work if I could devote my full energy to it." Even though he was painting and even exhibiting all along, at age 40 he left the computer industry and dedicated himself to pursuing a fine-art career.

Arturo wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Read more about Arturo: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_09_16.html

SELF Photography Exhibition

Calls for Submissions - Digital Media, Mixed media, Photography Photo Gallery

IF the ancient Greeks implored us to "know thyself" and common knowledge assures us that " a picture is worth a thousands words", doesn't it follow that the amalgamation of random know-nothing's collectively called "the human race" should be CONSTANTLY photographing themselves in an effort to gain true wisdom and artistic insight? It should! And also because it's just plain insanely inventive to do so! Just ask ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE or CINDY SHERMAN. This month 1650 goes completely SELF-CENTERED as we pay homage to the time-honored art of the SELF-PORTRAIT! And while we highly encourage you NOT to cut your ear off before snapping your own mug, we do encourage you to muster a little bit of the artistic passion that fueled a certain well-known Dutch dude's compulsion to capture the true spirit within. So this month, whether you have a face that launched a thousand ships or you are a bit more on the JoJo the Dog-Faced Boy side of the tracks, grab a camera and crank out an image that is indisputably YOU! Because EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL in its own way, and at 1650 this time we are being TOTALLY selfish about things as we dive head first into the wonderful world of SELF-PORTRAITS and SELFIES!!!

Call to Photographers - Personal Narrative

Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Photo Gallery

Photographic images are by their nature deeply rooted in personal emotion, regardless of whether they are found or created, and regardless of genre. As photographers who strive to convey our visions in a true and honest manner, we establish an emotional connection to each image we create. We hope, in turn, to share that connection with all who view that image. In so doing, we reveal something of ourselves. For Personal Narrative, we seek images that, through symbolism, metaphor, and personal stories, are ultimately an exploration of self. All capture methods and processes are welcome. We could not be more pleased that Susan Burnstine has agreed to jury Personal Narrative. She will select 35 images for exhibition in the gallery, and another 40 images for exhibition in our online gallery. All 75 will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog and remain permanently on our website.

Urban Riche Gallery- Abstraction Competition/Exhibition

Online Event - Contests, Juried Art Shows - Acrylic, Ceramics, Crafts, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Jewelry, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Online Gallery

Pablo Picasso once said that "Abstract art is only painting. And what's so dramatic about that? There is no abstract art. One must always begin with something. Afterwards one can remove all semblance of reality; there is no longer any danger as the idea of the object has left an indelible imprint." For many artists, the "danger" of the abstract lies in the possibility that the work may lose all conscious notion of the abstract as soon as an idea, emotion, object, or any other piece of reality enters the artist's or viewers thoughts when viewing the work. A work originally thought to be "easy" or gifted the remark of "a kid could paint that" can sometimes be the most difficult style to create. It takes true originality and creativity to completely remove the boundaries of reality. Urban Riche Gallery is asking artists with that unique and original talent who create truly abstract works to submit to our Abstraction Exhibition. We are putting out an international call for artists who produce the best abstract images in the world. The subject matter and medium of the work is left to the artist. We are accepting art of ALL MEDIUMS for a juried online exhibition running from October 1st-31st, Urban Riche Gallery's Abstraction exhibition will feature the very best emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. Open to all artists 18+ except where prohibited by law.

Atlas Art Contest

Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Jewelry, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Other

The Atlas Society seeks entries for the online Atlas Art Contest. Theme: The Entrepreneur. Entry deadline: Sept. 30, 2016. Entry fee: $10.00. Four judges will pick the top finalists, then the winners will be selected by public vote. Jurors include renowned sculptor Sabin Howard. Artists project—and viewers respond to—a re-creation of reality: a view of reality informed by their beliefs and values. Though Ayn Rand is revered—and reviled—as an intellectual, a writer, and a philosopher, she was, above all, an artist. She used art to illuminate human potential, to light the path forward, and to lead the way. Today, the moral ideals of reason, achievement, and individualism are in danger of being lost, with dire consequences for a free society. Ayn Rand conveyed those ideals brilliantly in her novels, but they must be renewed in every generation through the imagination and talent of artists who, like Rand, can lead the way. To foster this renewal, we at the Atlas Society—a 25-year-old think tank devoted to the philosophy of Objectivism—will leverage the power of art to inspire, surprise, delight, and provoke in order to introduce a new generation to the values contained in Rand's works. We invite artists of all types—whether painters, sculptors, cartoonists, or photographers—to represent their own take on these crucial values in visually arresting, engaging, and alluring new ways. At the end of the entry period, our notable panel of judges will select 20 finalists. Cash-prize winners will then be selected by public vote.

PH21 Gallery: Call for Entries - Portraiture

Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery

A juried international photography exhibition. November 24 – December 13, 2016. Exhibit in Europe! Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts, and the tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways by which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception; numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. Today we live in an exciting new era for portraiture. There has never been a time in human history when so many portraits were produced day after day as in the era of digital technologies. Photographers have responded to the cultural, social and technological changes by reinterpreting the age-old genre of portraiture, and it is always an exciting and rewarding task to organize an exhibition for some of the recent achievements in the field. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Portraiture. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this genre, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; from traditional fine art portraits to selfies, people may be portrayed in countless unique ways. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.
