Happy New Year from TheArtList!

“The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.” ~Auguste Rodin

Wow 2017! When we started TheArtList back in 2003, it was just a simple idea for a posting board, a way to connect artists and galleries. At that time, there was no Google, no social media, and most artists were slowly and perhaps reluctantly embracing putting their work online. Times have changed, and over the the last thirteen years, TheArtList has evolved into something much more than that posting board. Yes, we still keep to our core focus of posting high quality calls and connecting artists and galleries, but it is amazing to look back and see the thousands of artists and galleries who have used TheArtList as a platform to promote and connect. Now with social media, the art world is more engaged and connected than ever and we are happy to be playing a part of the online art world!

So as we move forward to a new year, I wanted to take a minute to personally thank all of you who have supported TheArtList over the years. We know that there are many places online for galleries to promote their calls and artists to look for calls to enter, and we appreciate your patronage! If you like what we do, please don't hesitate to tell others about TheArtList.

Second Place Winner

Congratulations to Robin Okun, our second place winner. Robin wins a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama.

She says: "The intention of my art is to catalyze body image awareness by challenging perceptions of what is body beautiful. My figures celebrate women of all shapes and sizes with evocative expressive color to centerpiece their beauty, power and sensitivity. My goal is to initiate conversations about ourselves and our bodies; moving beyond judgment to self love, acceptance and empowerment. "

Visit Robin's website at:  http://www.robinokunstudio.com/

Viewer's Choice Award Winner

Our Viewer's Choice Winner is Amy Nicholls. Amy says "My current interest is in exploring how I ‘make’ tattoos. I will either be releasing pre-drawn designs that I wish to tattoo, or I will be approaching my custom requests with a much different working process. It’s important to me that tattoos flow with the body and be, not only a lovely piece of art in itself, but also take into account the entire body as a whole. With this new focus, my approach to the tattoo process will have to change."

Amy wins a $25 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. You may see more of her work here:

The Color of Light

Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Photo Gallery

"Three themes interest me most in photography: light, color and moments. "Light produces color. Light can be soft or intense; color can provoke or excite. It can also inform. And for me, that is the power and joy of the color of light." — Arthur Meyerson. For this call for submissions, we seek images that demonstrate the power and joy of the color of light. All capture methods and processes are welcome. We are honored indeed that Arthur Meyerson will be the juror for The Color of Light. Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Art Gallery

A non-juried, open-walls Exhibition at ARC Gallery, Chicago. Feb. 1 - 25, 2017. "Seeing RED" will be an Open Walls Exhibition, giving artists the opportunity to exhibit their work at ARC without a juror. ARC is asking artists to reflect on what "Seeing RED" might look like, what it might reference metaphorically, emotionally, politically, or literally. We're seeking work that challenges the status quo or obvious, while asking the artists to have fun playing with this very broad title. All mediums and materials are eligible if they conform to the size limitations. The art-work must be no more than 18 inches wide, (including a possible frame).

PH21 Gallery: Call for Entries - Punctum

Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery

A juried international photography exhibition,March 9 – April 4, 2017. Roland Barthes in his Camera Lucida famously introduced the concept punctum in opposition with studium. Studium refers to the manifest content of the photograph that is responsible for creating interest in the image, and we may be interested in the subject of photographs for all sorts of reasons. However, it is only images with punctum that capture our attention for the sake of their formal photographic qualities, regardless of their depicted content. It is a detail of the image that sharply captures our attention, attracts us to the photograph and makes it stand out of the thousands of other photographs we encounter. It is a formalist condition, and discovering the presence of punctum in an image depends on the searching eye of the spectator. Thus punctum is regarded as a highly subjective notion by many, while others may argue that there could be objective ways of demonstrating the presence of punctum in some works. It is likely among the most challenging tasks for a photographer to create images with punctum but this is precisely what we are looking for in this exhibition. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Punctum. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this topic and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The topic is broadly construed, as the presence of punctum is independent of generic or stylistic constraints.

We are excited to announce our eighth annual national juried art show, Wide Open 8, opening May 13, 2017. Our juror is another of NY's art elite, the Museum of Modern Art's Cara Manes, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture. $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded including $1000 Best in Show Gold. The exhibit runs May 13 - June 18. Ours is a truly unique gallery – a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. The broad theme of "Wide Open 8" encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love - wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open - but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite - wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looks to explore the idea of "wide open" in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche. This call for submissions is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2-D and 3-D media, including film/video when part of an installation.
