Alternative Processes: The Hand of the Artist

As beautiful as a fine inkjet print can be, one thing is missing: the hand of the artist. For this exhibition we're asking for images made from a traditional silver halide print or any substrate that has been hand-coated with light-sensitive material. This includes platinum/palladium, cyanotype, Vandyke, salt, Kallitype, photogravure … the list goes on. The "print" can be on paper or any other substrate that brings life to a photographic image. You take it from there. Submissions are JPEGs. Exhibition prints must be the original print. We are honored that Dan Burkholder will be the juror for Alternative Processes. He will select 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog. A juried international photography exhibition, April 6 – May 1, 2017. There are all sorts of natural and artificial scenes that capture the attention of photographers, compel and inspire them to pause, observe and create an image for the sake of the scene and convey a personal interpretation of what they can see. These types of photographs go by a variety of names; they are called landscapes, cityscapes, streetscapes, seascapes, waterscapes, cloudscapes, or even desertscapes, treescapes, bodyscapes, and the like. Among these photographs the most successful ones go well beyond the mere recording of the visual qualities of a place as they bear the marks of the interpretive insights of the photographer. They make us contemplate a scene as meaningful and significant. For it is never challenging to merely re-present; it takes a novel conception of the scene to engage us, viewers, through the keen eyes and the creative mind of the photographer. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed –scapes. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed, as the photographic portrayal of scenes of the natural and built environment is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. As well as looking for skill in the use of material, we want to see art that demonstrates the importance of conserving our limited natural resources. Foundry Gallery, one of Washington, DC's premier contemporary galleries, will host a guest solo exhibit for the month of August 2017. Foundry Gallery is located in the revitalized North End Shaw neighborhood in an industrial style space on the ground floor of the Atlantic Plumbing Building. Foundry Gallery is welcoming proposals for this juried exhibition to be held in its solo show gallery featuring 65 feet of running wall space with significant street-front exposure. A diagram of the space is included with the Guest Exhibition Prospectus. This exhibition call is open to all artists 18 years or older residing in the US with the understanding that it is the artist's responsibility to deliver work to and after the show pick up work from the gallery. The guest artist is also expected to attend the opening reception usually scheduled for the first Saturday evening of the month. The deadline for entry for the August 2017 guest solo exhibition is March 15, 2017. Submissions are to be made through Submittable and a non-refundable $40 entry fee is charged at the time of entry.

All photographers residing in the United States are invited to submit one photograph taken in the United States after January 1, 2013 for the Naples Art Association's seventh annual photography competition. Camera USA™ 2017 is a brick and mortar exhibition and will be held in the Naples Art Association in Naples, Florida from June 19 - August 4, 2017. A $5,000 award will be presented to one photographer. The National Photography Award winner will receive three-nights hotel accommodations in Naples, Florida and round trip air travel to attend the preview reception and accept the award on June 16, 2017. Three distinguished jurors will review all entries and nominate the National Photography Award Winner. The jurors are David Houston, Director of the Bo Bartlett Center, Columbus State University in Georgia; Gary Monroe, Senior Professor, Southeast Center for Photographic Studies, Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Florida; and Robin O'Dell, Curatorial Administrator and Manager of Photographic Collections, Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida. The entry fee is $28. The Naples Art Association is a 63-year old visual arts non-profit organization located in the heart of the 5th Avenue South shopping, dining and entertainment district. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. Gallery hours during the Camera USA™ 2017 exhibition will be Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.
