Artist of the Month Contest Winners |
Artist of The Month Winner Geoffrey Harding is our Grand Prize Winner for July 2017. Geoffrey's remarks about his prize-winning painting "In the painting the hunter is about to take the deer but recognizes him as an elder. I wanted to convey a feeling of respect or reverence for the deer, and hope the viewer recognizes this, thus the name "A Quiet Reverence for Grandfather." Inspiration comes from years of respect for Native
culture, and educating people of a now vanished way of life." Geoffrey wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Read more:

Second Place Winner Congratulations to Marian Fortunati, our second place winner. She wins a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. After a long career as a Teacher and Elementary Principal, Marian has combined her past professional experience with her love of travel, working on location as often as possible. Fortunati met and married her husband, Gastone, while traveling in Venice, Italy. Fortunati’s travels and life experiences provide the
foundation from which her artwork is created.
Oil is Fortunati’s favored medium as it offers a variety of ways to create interesting experiments with texture and color. Her wide mixture of learning opportunities has established a strong foundation in the Impressionist tradition of seeing and painting shapes of light and color. The subjects were always available and sat still. For students of the arts, "still life" was the
entry into drawing and painting. Soon "still life" evolved into an art subject that most people can relate to. Modern art trends brought creative license with the subject that resulted in amazing innovations. "Still Life," a staple subject in the art world, is created in a vast variety of styles, subjects and media from photorealism to total abstraction and consistently collected by museums as well as by individual collectors everywhere. | | DEADLINE JULY 09, 2017 - $850 in Awards MATERIAL MATTERS:
Innovations in Clay, Glass, Wood & Metal Calls for Submissions - Ceramics, Glass, Mosaic, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture Art Organization What is art and what is design? Where is the line? Is there a line? When did the concept of functionality become antithetical to fine art? What is the role of design in art and art in design? Must we still refer way back to Plato, who identifies only music and poetry as fine arts, relegating the work of the
hand as lowly materiality? Surely, nearly a quarter into the 21st century, we must re-assess our thoughts about where boundaries exist now. Ours are the "too, too solid flesh" of the arts -- actual, not virtual, art in three dimensions. We may be the last bastion of brilliance in designing the material world, and isn't this the right time to celebrate that? MATERIAL MATTERS is seeking work that explores ideas about form over function in work using clay, glass, wood or metal alone or in
combination. This is a national juried exhibition for artists 18 years of age or older. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. All work must be handcrafted by the artist. Mass production work and commercially manufactured pieces will not be accepted. Exhibit dates: September 23-October 15, 2017. JUROR: Lilian Tone, Assistant Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA. Early Bird submissions – June 12th - $45 for up to six (8) images. On Time Submissions
between June 13th and June 25th -- $55 for submission of up to six (8)images. Late Submissions between June 26th and July 9th-- $65 for submission of up to six (8) images. $5 for each additional image. Submissions are online only.
