Grants for Visual Artists

The Franz and Virginia Bader Fund invites grant applications from visual artists who are aged 40 years and over and who live within 150 miles of Washington, DC. Artists working in performance, video, and film are not eligible for Bader Fund grants. Grants may be used for any purposes relating to the recipients’ work as artists.

Selection Process
Following submission of a complete set of application materials, applicants may be contacted by Fund staff for further information. All information given by applicants is subject to verification by the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund. The selection committee reviews eligible applications in the fall. The Fund notifies applicants of the outcome of their applications before the end of the calendar year. Decisions reached by the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund are final.

Size of Awards:
In 2016, the Bader Fund awarded seven grants totaling $105,000.

About:
Franz Bader was an important presence on the Washington art scene. He believed his role as a gallery owner was to reveal hidden artistic talent to the public. He wanted to continue this work after his death and decided, with his wife, Virginia, to establish a fund to help mature artists to continue working to develop their talent.
