Happy New Year from TheArtList
“Don't hesitate to paint intense color from the start. It is far easier to
subdue a color later than to make a weak lifeless area come alive again." Jeanne Dobie
Wow 2018! When we started TheArtList back in 2003, it was just a simple idea for a posting board, a way to connect artists and galleries. At that time, there was no Google, Facebook, social media, and most artists were slowly and perhaps
reluctantly embracing putting their work online. Times have changed, and over the the last fifteen years, TheArtList has evolved into something much more than the original posting board. Yes, we still keep to our core focus of posting high quality calls and connecting artists and galleries, but it is amazing to look back and see the thousands of artists and galleries who have used TheArtList as a platform to promote and connect. Now the art world is more engaged and connected than
ever, and we are happy to still be playing a part.
So as we move forward to a new year, I wanted to take a minute to personally thank all of you who have supported TheArtList over the years. We know that there are many places online for galleries to promote their calls and for artists to look for calls to enter, and we appreciate your continued patronage! If you like what we do, please don't hesitate to tell others about
TheArtList.
The New Year brings resolutions and new beginnings. Do you have any new artistic goals for 2018? Maybe a new medium to try, a new residency to apply to, or a new contest to enter?

Changes to TheArtList's Monthly Contest
As mentioned last month, the caliber of artwork submitted to the The Artist of the Month contest has
inspired us to add a new award level for the new year. Beginning with this month's contest, we are adding a Third place winner award. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are selected by TheArtList editors and will be awarded with gift certificates from Jerry's Artarama. The "Viewer's Choice" winner, which is an audience selected winner, will no longer receive a gift card award and instead will receive recognition through TheArtList's social media channels as well as announced in
the monthly newsletter.
Purchase a Premium Membership to TheArtList
It's not too late to treat yourself to a premium membership to TheArtList.com. It is still only $27 a year and membership allows you to bypass the advertising, gives you full search
capabilities and gives you the full contact information for all calls. Your support helps keep TheArtList going! Upgrading is as simple as clicking on the Upgrade link in your member area.
Don't forget to follow us on social media. We post new calls just about daily on our Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, and Pinterest feeds. We often post calls that are sent to us too late to make the current month's newsletter and end before the following month's newsletter.
Wishing you a very Happy and Creative New Year!
Artist of the Month Contest Winners |
Artist of The Month Winner Julie Dodd is the Grand Prize Winner for December, winning a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Julie Dodd
was born on the Wirral, England where she continues to reside and work. Dodd usually works with paper, often reusing old books and magazines but includes other recycled materials in her work which often reflect concerns of our environmental responsibility. Dodd received her first class BA honours degree in fine art from Wirral Metropolitan College in 2009 and was awarded a fellowship placement at the same institute for the following year. As well as using this time to develop her practice,
mentor students she finished the year by showing her a large body of work based on trees in the fellowship show at the Williamson Art Gallery, which were exhibited as part of the Liverpool Independents Biennial. More about Dodd and her work can be seen on her artist page at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_01_18.html

Second Place Winner Lynne Furrer, our second place winner, wins a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Furrer took her first
watercolor class to apply painting techniques to her photography. Instead, she fell in love with the flow of water and its magical attraction to pigment on paper! Her style transforms the representational into the mysterious. Lynne works out of a studio she shares with her husband near Denver, Colorado. Furrer says: My images are like stories I author using mediums such as watercolor, oil, mixed media and encaustics. I believe the world is connected in a spiritual
way which can be communicated through art. When these connections are made between myself and others, we harness the ability to speak a common language which uses more than words to open the path to our collective consciousness. This unified force allows us to share more richly and deeply about our experiences and journey through life. You may see more of Furrer's work at: https://lynnefurrer.com/Viewer's Choice Award Winner Kim Young-Mi wins the Viewer's Choice Award and $25 to Jerry's Artarama. Kim's artist statement says "My interest is an infinite world that is unfolded behind a mortal life. In order to pass this world onto an artwork, I have chosen action painting. The act of throwing my whole body to the spread-out fabric instead of the paintbrush is the process of projecting my unconsciousness as it is and the best method to reflect the world
that I want to express.
Mostly the unprocessed cloths are chosen to be used for action painting as it is the best fabric to represent the texture of skin. The cloths that can adequately absorb the properties of paint and embrace the traces are similar to the skin that melts accords with the passage of time. In other words, the activity of placing my traces onto the cloths represents the media to
reflect my mortal life as it is." Kim's work can be viewed at: http://artist1001.com/

| | DEADLINE JANUARY 07, 2018 Blurry Photography Exhibition Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Photo Gallery This month at 1650 we embrace your smeared, stretched, soft and shaken side, so set that shutter long, twist that lens fully wide and crank that focus ring until it's
so wrong it feels just right. Join us as we let our hair down, leave our eyeglasses at home, go full loosey-goosey and enter the wonderful world of Blurry! Approximately fifty works will be chosen from submitted photos to be included in the BLURRY group photography exhibition at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles. Perhaps the most rebellious act of the fine art photographer is to choose to abandon sharpness as the holy grail of image-making. Camera manufacturers constantly assail us with the notion
that their cameras and optics are "tack-sharp," "pin-sharp' and "razor-sharp." But as any of us who have seen the movie Risky Business know, sometimes you just have to say "*@#$ it!" and get fast and loose with the focus ring; literally and figuratively! Going Blurry is a bit like going rogue — leaving the uptight suit and tie sharpness geeks behind to go upstate and work on a communal farm where optical correctness is a thing of the past, and soft focus, motion blur, visual smearing and a
general sharpness-challenged culture of permissiveness is the order of the day! We're not saying you won't have some down days — the sharpness police always have their say after all. But at least when your Uncle Jim visits your gallery show, stares at your work quizzically and mumbles "Looks a little blurry!" you can proudly smile and declare "I know — thanks for noticing!"

ONE Calls for Submissions - Photography Art Organization Remember the Three Dog Night song "One is the Loneliest Number". But is it? In this call we are looking for those images with a single compelling focal point. It could be a person or thing that is alone in the frame or an element of a large grouping that clearly stands out. A lot filled with blue cars with a single bright red one would fit the bill as would a portrait reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth's
"Christina's World", and the six foot tall teacher surrounded by his or her grade school class. Selective focus can isolate a single horse from the herd or a single pedestrian from the crowd on a city street. What about that basketball player leaping in the air for a dunk shot or the prematurely leafless tree amidst a forest of foliage? Once again the possibilities are endless out there - let's see how you capture them.

| | DEADLINE JANUARY 25, 2018 PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Just in Time Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery A juried international photography exhibition. February 15 – March 10, 2018. Photography has a unique connection with time. Indeed, photographs are often described in terms of their relationship to time. We often hear that a photograph freezes the fleeting moment in time, others are said to convey the passing
of time, and there are some that may present something timeless or eternal. Time in photography may be expressed by capturing motion or recording stillness, as well as through other photographic and symbolic means. While in some sense it is not even possible for photography to not be about time, for this exhibition we seek images in which time gains special importance. The significance of time may originate in the composition or photographic technique of the image or time itself may be the
subject of photograph, expressed in the content of the image by visual or symbolic ways. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Just in Time. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all
possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Art Gallery There has been a long history about the relationship between food as art, as sensual, as political. Food pulls all of our senses to attention immediately. Chefs strive to impress us with every bite being a beautiful and sensual experience. My favorite food movies are Babette's Feast and Sideways. Favorite visual food artists are Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Dutch golden age still lifes, Post-Impressionist painter
Cezanne, pop artists Wayne Thiebaud and Andy Warhol, political Feminist artists Miriam Schapiro and Judy Chicago and artist Tiberio Simone, just to name a few. This art historical theme and my passion for cooking and food experiences is how the BITEme show developed. So, go ahead, it's ok to play with your food. "BITEme" is an open-call juried exhibition inviting submissions exploring everything and anything about food. All styles and media are welcome to submit. Judging this exhibition: Joel
Kane & Monkut Sayasit. Joel and Chef Monkut have been working in culinary industry in Cedar Rapids for a total of 33 years. They have been working together at Betas Restaurant in NewBo since 2013 pushing the limits of both food and cocktails creating amazing flavor combinations that surprise and delight even the most sophisticated pallets. Both have multiple awards, locally and regionally, in their areas of expertise. Monkut has competed in, and won several competitions including Iowa's
Taste of Elegance, the annual competition put on by the Iowa Pork Producers. Joel was recently awarded Iowa's Top Mixologist of 2017 and continues to bridge the gap between classic cocktails and unique, modern combinations.

Awards WIDE OPEN 9 – Call for Submissions Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Digital Media, Glass, Mosaic, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Art Organization We are excited to announce our eighth annual national juried art show, Wide Open 9, opening May 12, 2018. Our juror is Carmen Hermo,
Assistant Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded, including $1000 Best in Show The exhibit runs May 12 - June 17, 2018. Ours is a truly unique gallery – a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. exhibiting artist's work from all around the country, work in all sizes, and subjects, and media, (it's completely wide open). The broad theme of "Wide Open 9" encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love - wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open - but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite - wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looks to explore the idea of "wide open" in
all the hidden niches of our collective psyche. This call for submissions is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2-D and 3-D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. All work should be non-utilitarian in nature. This is a fine art exhibition. Early Bird discount through January 19,
2018.
