Filmmakers have known for 100 years that something magical happens when you add music to
images. The two combine to create something more magical than the sum of their parts. Just ask any 6 year old who has balled their eyes out at the end of ET! But what about those scruffy downtown cats who actually make the music? Here at 1650 we got to wondering what their world is like? A large part of the musical life is lived on stage; those are the glory times and the moments when the musician is in his natural element, doing what they do best. This we want to see; concert photos can capture
the power and the glory of musical expression.
But there is another side too: the backstage, offstage side of the musician. On the bus, car or train on the way to the gig. Navigating nightclubs, bars and concert halls. At rehearsals and studio sessions. Writing and alone time. Relaxing with friends, working the crowd or posing for the ever-present band photo. All these elements combine to create the musician’s life, whether pro, semi-pro or
amateur. And this month at 1650 we want to see it all: Street buskers, one-man bands, classical quartets, rock gods, jazz legends, open-mic hopefuls, piano prodigies, church choirs, fat ladies singing and of course the roadies, fans and groupies, big time or small potatoes!
So if you’re ready to take YOUR act on the proverbial road then put on your blue suede shoes and point your camera toward anything that squeaks, honks, moans, rattles and
rolls or blows, and show us the saucy, sultry and sometimes seamy world of music. Join with us at 1650 this month as we push through the crowd, get our hands stamped and our drink tickets and proudly say to the guy at the door: "I'M WITH THE BAND!!!"
Approximately fifty works will be chosen from submitted photos to be included in the I'M WITH THE BAND group photography exhibition at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles.
There is an entry fee of $40 for up to 5 images. Additional entries may be submitted for $5 each. We offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit our pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. We have a variety of frames and mats to choose from. We will also print your photo for a nominal fee if you are accepted into the show and would prefer not to mail a print. Selected artists may choose to offer their work for sale. The
gallery retains 50% sales commission.
AWARDS: Best In Show, 2nd Place and 3rd
Place will be awarded and posted online after the show opening. Award winning photos will be featured on the show page and Best In Show winners will have a small portfolio of their work (up to 10 images) featured in our 1650 Spotlight gallery of photographic excellence.
All Awards winners will also be featured in our 1650 Gallery newsletter, which is broadcast via email to our mailing list. Getting the word out about artists we're excited
about helps you do more great work, helps us show more great work, and helps keep the often insular world of fine art photography more diverse and vibrant.
