💕Happy February from TheArtList 💕

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Thomas Merton

February is here and a cold winter is in full swing across most of the country. According to our fellow groundhog in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil, there are at least six more weeks until spring so now is a good time as any to hunker down and tap into your inner creativity. This month we have a great variety of opportunities for you to choose. From portrait themed exhibits to realism, wildlife, ceramics, photography and more. Take the time to check them all out.  You'll be glad that you did!

Oh, and be sure to buy your Valentine some art this year. It lasts longer than chocolate!

*Changes* to TheArtList's Monthly Contest

As mentioned last month, the caliber of artwork submitted to the The Artist of the Month contest has inspired us to add a new award level for the new year. Beginning with this month's contest, we are adding a Third place winner award. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are selected by TheArtList editors and will be awarded with gift certificates from Jerry's Artarama. The "Viewer's Choice" winner, which is an audience selected winner, will no longer receive a gift card award and instead will receive recognition through TheArtList's social media channels as well as announced in the monthly newsletter.

Artist of the Month Contest Winners
Artist of The Month Winner

David Martsolf is our February Grand Prize Winner! He was born in 1949 in Kansas, moved to western Pennsylvania in early childhood and at age 12 moved to New Hampshire where he resides today. Martsolf's father and grandfather were architects and his mother a photographer. Martsolf attended MIT and later UNH where he earned a degree in Fine Arts. His early work was influenced by all the great masters and others such as the post-impressionists Miro, Mondrian, Matisse, Kandinsky, Klee, etc. Martsolf wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Read more about his work here:  https://www.theartlist.com/aom_02_18.html

Second Place Winner
Jose Pardo is our second place winner, winning a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Jose says about his winning painting: "I started this painting while we were waiting for Hurricane Irma. I wanted to name it "Sunflowers for Irma" or "Irma's Sunflowers", but my wife didn't want to have a destructive storm's name attached to the painting. She's a lot smarter than I am. So I added the little jar of honey and then the bee, and we wound up with "Sunflowers for my Honey". I really tried not to rush this one, and I think it paid off, it's now one of my favorites."
As a child he loved to travel into Manhattan with his grandfather to purchase fabrics for his custom tailor business, all the while hoping to catch a glimpse of Spiderman swinging between the skyscrapers. He started learning to draw by copying comic books. At that early age Jose couldn’t comprehend how it was possible for people to draw such amazing art, since my attempts to replicate the drawings were abysmal.

Viewers Choice Winner
Victoria Garner studied art at Brigham Young University, UT and County College of Morris, NJ . She lives in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee where her studio is located in her home.

As an artist, Vicki got her start early in life. In school, her teachers often displayed her drawings and her work was praised by her classmates. She could always be found with a pencil and paper in hand, tucked into a corner of her room drawing whatever took her fancy at the moment. When she was eleven, her mother enrolled her in a summer art program at the local art museum. From there, she continued with her art education in the public school system and later in college.

Vicki’s work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions and galleries in New Jersey, Alabama and Tennessee and is represented in private collections throughout the country. Her acrylic and watercolor paintings have been juried into many shows and exhibits and have won several awards.  See more at: https://www.facebook.com/victoriagarnerpainting

Faces of Humanity 2018

Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Online Gallery

Twenty artists will be selected for an online group exhibit, "FACES OF HUMANITY 2018" at Gallery25N; the exhibit and artists will be extensively marketed worldwide to over 26,100 people including art buyers, gallery owners, curators, collectors, etc. Participants must be 18 years of age or older working in any drawing medium. One artist will be selected to receive the "Christopher E. Burke Fine Art Grant" of $500.00. This artist's creation will become the image of the exhibition and will be used on the invitation, video title screen, and on all online marketing for the exhibit. In addition, the grant recipient will have a dedicated marketing campaign about their art and accomplishments sent to over 26,100 recipients worldwide. The artist will also be featured in the Art Market News letter. Theme and Selection: "Faces of Humanity 2018" – For this group exhibition the curators will be selecting artwork or photography that communicates the diversity of humanity by capturing the emotion, beauty, love, hope, and wisdom as seen in the faces of people from different cultures. Sensing a universal personage reflected in the facial expressions of people throughout the world offers us all an avenue leading to an understanding of, connection to, and perhaps even a convergence with other cultures. What may at first appear somewhat alien often will evolve into a realization and deep appreciation of the fact that we are all part of the family of man. Seeing our own humanity in the faces of other beings encourages understanding and acceptance of others' values and priorities.

BITEme

Contests, Juried Art Shows - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Art Gallery

There has been a long history about the relationship between food as art, as sensual, as political. Food pulls all of our senses to attention immediately. Chefs strive to impress us with every bite being a beautiful and sensual experience. My favorite food movies are Babette's Feast and Sideways. Favorite visual food artists are Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Dutch golden age still lifes, Post-Impressionist painter Cezanne, pop artists Wayne Thiebaud and Andy Warhol, political Feminist artists Miriam Schapiro and Judy Chicago and artist Tiberio Simone, just to name a few. This art historical theme and my passion for cooking and food experiences is how the BITEme show developed. So, go ahead, it's ok to play with your food. "BITEme" is an open-call juried exhibition inviting submissions exploring everything and anything about food. All styles and media are welcome to submit. Judging this exhibition: Joel Kane & Monkut Sayasit. Joel and Chef Monkut have been working in culinary industry in Cedar Rapids for a total of 33 years. They have been working together at Betas Restaurant in NewBo since 2013 pushing the limits of both food and cocktails creating amazing flavor combinations that surprise and delight even the most sophisticated pallets. Both have multiple awards, locally and regionally, in their areas of expertise. Monkut has competed in, and won several competitions including Iowa's Taste of Elegance, the annual competition put on by the Iowa Pork Producers. Joel was recently awarded Iowa's Top Mixologist of 2017 and continues to bridge the gap between classic cocktails and unique, modern combinations.

I'm With the Band: Photography Exhibition

Contests, Juried Art Shows - Digital Media, Photography Photo Gallery

A large part of the musical life is lived on stage; concert photos can capture the power and the glory of musical expression. But there is another side too: the backstage, offstage side of the musician. On the bus, car or train on the way to the gig. Navigating nightclubs, bars and concert halls. At rehearsals and studio sessions. Writing and alone time. Relaxing with friends, working the crowd or posing for the ever-present band photo. All these elements combine to create the musician's life, whether pro, semi-pro or amateur. And this month at 1650 we want to see it all: Street buskers, one-man bands, classical quartets, rock gods, jazz legends, open-mic hopefuls, piano prodigies, church choirs, fat ladies singing and of course the roadies, fans and groupies, big time or small potatoes! So if you're ready to take YOUR act on the proverbial road then put on your blue suede shoes and point your camera toward anything that squeaks, honks, moans, rattles and rolls or blows, and show us the saucy, sultry and sometimes seamy world of music. Join with us at 1650 this month as we push through the crowd, get our hands stamped and our drink tickets and proudly say to the guy at the door: "I'M WITH THE BAND"

Call for Entries: Peripheral Visions

Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery

A juried international photography exhibition.March 22 – April 14, 2018. Our visual environment is full of familiar objects and scenes; it is exactly this familiarity that makes the world around us a place that we can navigate more or less safely. However, the very same familiarity may dull our perception to the intriguing aspects or exciting details of what we pass by day after day. Photographers have a keen eye to capture the unnoticed, the marginal, and the peripheral – the almost invisible that escapes our attention in the ordinary course of our busy life. The photographer can make the unnoticed visible by focusing on a unique form, an interesting composition in our built environment, or by capturing an otherwise easily overlooked, peripheral scene in our personal or social life. It is only then, when the photograph is presented to us, that we realise that we are looking at something that we would most likely have failed to notice, had it not been for the photographer's eye for the marginal and the easy to miss. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Peripheral Visions. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

WIDE OPEN 9 – Call for Submissions

Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Digital Media, Glass, Mosaic, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Art Organization

We are excited to announce our eighth annual national juried art show, Wide Open 9, opening May 12, 2018. Our juror is Carmen Hermo, Assistant Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded, including $1000 Best in Show The exhibit runs May 12 - June 17, 2018. The broad theme of "Wide Open 9" encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love - wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open - but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite - wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looks to explore the idea of "wide open" in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche. This call for submissions is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2-D and 3-D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. All work should be non-utilitarian in nature. This is a fine art exhibition. Early Bird discount through January 19, 2018.

CALL FOR ENTRY - PORTALS

Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Photography Art Organization

There was a popular and silly song in the 1950's, "Close the Doors, They're Coming in the Windows". What about those doors and windows and arches and frames and tunnels? There are so many ways to capture them: looking at them, or through them. We can poke our hand out the window to test the weather, or just see a wonderful scene a little differently when framed by an arch or array of tree limbs in a park. For this call your images can focus on the "portal" itself like a closed door or a wonderful windowsill or the view through the portal to the other side. Does it frame the main subject of the photograph or does it add another dimension, such as the distortions of old glass or reflections in windowpanes.
