Happy March from TheArtList
"I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people." Vincent Van Gogh

Artist of the Month Contest Winners |
Artist of The Month Winner Jose
Higuera is our March Grand Prize Winner. At an early age Jose showed a defined interest in drawing and painting, being this a tendency noticed by his school teachers. His first exhibitions were received with interest by the critics and the public. He works exclusively with the Art Gallery and Auction House of Madrid and has built up experience and contacts that allow him to dedicate his time exclusively to painting. He has presented
his works in a number of exhibitions throughout Spain, USA and Asia. Jose lives in Cantabria in the North of Spain. He wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Read more about his work here: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_03_18.html

Second Place Winner Karlyn Holloway is our second place winner, winning a $50 gift
certificate to Jerry's Artarama. She currently lives in Cabot, AR with her husband and two dogs and has always had a love of drawing. In high school she often had a sketchbook with her and drew portraits of friends. Karlyn graduated from Arkansas State University with an Associate degree in art, and then furthered her education at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. She is trained in multiple art mediums including pencil, watercolor and
oil. She likes to let the subject, mood, and message dictate the medium. Much of her work lately has been inspired by the stories of our lives, be it from books or from the work of our hands. Karlyn is an award winning national and international artist and a signature member of the Arkansas League of Artists and Mid-Southern Watercolor. Her watercolors have traveled with the Arkansas Art Centers traveling exhibit for the last two years. Karlyn's work is in collections such as the Baxter
County Library, and the Arkansas Pediatric Facility in North Little Rock, AR. and across the U.S.A. and Internationally. She is currently is represented by the Butler Gallery in Little Rock, AR. Visit her website at: https://karlynholloway.com Third Place Winner Julie Levine wins third place and a $25 gift certificate from Jerry's
Artarama. Julie's artist statement: "Freedom of expression….it is as vital to life as the air we breathe. I have learned to treasure all forms of expression – and my art is my voice. I was a victim of domestic violence and was not permitted to express myself for two decades. I was not allowed to own a paintbrush. I was prohibited from standing before an easel. After graduating from the Hartford Art School in 1978 with a B.F.A. in Art Education, I ended up in an abusive
relationship for many years - and my art was strictly forbidden. That period of my life has come to an end. In 2008, I returned to my passion with a uniquely revitalized message and meaning. I now have a voice. The voice of a survivor. A voice that hopes to tell everyone that no one should ever take away our freedom of expression. I have come “full circle” – back to my art." Learn more about Julie and her work at http://julielevinefineart.com. Viewers Choice Winner Cristina White-Jones says "I was born and raised in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas. My mother
is a photographer who ran a gallery in Dripping Springs when I was a child, so I was surrounded by artisans and their work. For as long as I can remember I’ve always felt that need to create. I graduated from Texas State University in 2003 with a BFA in painting. In the past there has been time spent away from my work as I received and healed from surgeries, but I've held on to my goals and have never given them up. My current body of work explores all of the emotions I
experience on a daily basis. Combined with the organic elements of nature, color, and texture inherent to my earlier pieces, I feel that my art has achieved an elevated dimension with these many influences." See more at: https://www.cristinawhitejones.com/

| | DEADLINE MARCH 04, 2018 - $4000 in Awards CALL FOR ENTRY - PORTALS Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Photography Art Organization There was a popular and silly song in the 1950's, "Close the Doors, They're Coming in the Windows". What about those doors and
windows and arches and frames and tunnels? There are so many ways to capture them: looking at them, or through them. We can poke our hand out the window to test the weather, or just see a wonderful scene a little differently when framed by an arch or array of tree limbs in a park. For this call your images can focus on the "portal" itself like a closed door or a wonderful windowsill or the view through the portal to the other side. Does it frame the main subject of the photograph or does it add
another dimension, such as the distortions of old glass or reflections in windowpanes. Online Event

| | DEADLINE MARCH 08, 2018 Call for Entries: Significant Colour - Juried International Photography Exhibition Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery April 19 – May 12, 2018. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours
bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply because the available film or digital technology has long turned colour to be the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in
black and white the same way; that they are in colour is not merely a technological given, rather, it is an integral, formative and significant aspect of their photographic meaning. We may think of these photographs as colour by significance. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Significant Colour. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in the significance of any colour in photography and would like to share their
work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed, as the significance of colours is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.
