Happy June from TheArtList
"You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at the picture for a second
and think of it all your life." Joan Miro
June has arrived and with it more cool art opportunities from TheArtList.com. It is the start of the summer art season with art festivals, fairs, and events being held all across the country. June is also a great time of year to get outside, refresh your mind, and find some creative inspiration before the lazy days of late summer
arrive.
Did you know that we only feature a fraction of the calls that come into TheArtList.com in the newsletter? We post featured calls almost every day on our social media (links at the bottom of the page) but there are also many calls that come in on a daily basis that can only be found in TheArtList.com's online database.
Have a happy and creative June!
Artist of the Month Contest Winners |
Artist of The Month Winner This month's grand prize winner is Junkyu Lee who wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Junkyu's artist statement: "Anyone of us goes through ups and downs each day. Each of us has something that is meaningful and precious or meaningless and trifling. Yet, it doesn’t take long for us to recognize that something is precious amidst mundane things. My artworks capture those everyday moments which we tend to easily lose the sight of. In my daily existence, I recognize in me
“an obtuse person” who is regretting and longing for the things that were not appreciated previously. Anyone can have such an experience. I want to recollect such a reflection and depict an earnest feeling of cherishing every second in my drawings and paintings. If you can record daily routines by recalling the memory of each moment one by one like a series of snapshots,
you can realize that there are numerous emotions in daily routines which at the time seemed utterly ordinary. Amidst dull and boring and yet busy daily existence, there are countless moments of escape, pleasure, suffering, crying, and laughing which are not only a part of my daily existence but also a part of everyone else’s. Subjects in my paintings can be traced back to things that can be found in the ordinary. I want to capture daily activities like eating, resting, driving and
working, which can happen instantly without a serious contemplation, in great details so that the sceneries, still objects, and people in my artworks can transpire the in depth feeling of those exact moments. Hence, the main theme of my paintings is “mundane yet cheerful everyday existence.” I utilize oil painting, color pencils, and other materials and employ painting and drawing techniques to put images on canvas."

Second Place Winner Lis Zadravec is our second place winner, winning a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Lis Zadravec’s extraordinary and inspirational award-winning artwork, created primarily in colored pencil, expresses poignant human expression. Her subjects reveal themselves with their vulnerabilities and their strengths. The artist’s innate skills are combined with superb detail and composition, masterful treatment of facial features and hands, a myriad of textures,
and articulated light and shadow. Her style is reminiscent of the masterful illustrations and paintings of generations past. She demonstrates an uncanny ability to master her medium. You can learn more about Lis at her website: https://www.liszadravec.com. Third Place Winner Nick Watson wins third place and a $25 gift certificate from Jerry's Artarama. Nick Watson comes from a long line of military service members going all the way back to the Revolutionary War (the winning side). He retired from the Marine Corps as a highly decorated Chief Warrant Officer, with service awards including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Valor. In the late 1990’s, he began
dabbling in painting, using mostly paints and other items found at the local hardware store. After a more than ten year hiatus, he began painting in earnest in 2013 and in late 2014, took it up as a full-time vocation following his final retirement from government service. He has graduated from using hardware store cast-offs and works primarily on wood panels with acrylic paints, inks, and mediums. He is exploring an interest in mixed media, and recently began experimenting with reactive metal
paints, collage, and found objects. He is heavily influenced by a love of nature and the water, having been an avid surfer for more than 30 years, and the culturally diverse experiences of his many years traveling the world. Nick and his wife Francesca are co-owners of The Makery, where Nick maintains his studio (aka “The Lab”) and helps out by providing the plucky comic relief at
every opportunity. Together, they live on a little over an acre of beautiful Texas dirt with a flock of chickens, one dog, a garden, and assorted wildlife. Whenever possible, Nick enjoys listening to classic rock and blues music, preferably at top volume. Nick’s work can be seen on his website, his Facebook page, or in person at The Makery shop. Alana Judah is the Viewer's Choice Winner. Her interest in art was evident as soon as Alana was big enough to hold a crayon. She was always drawing, coloring or making something, she recently rekindled her love for painting when she came across The Art Sherpa YouTube Channel. Alana enjoys painting originals and commissioned pieces. Alana lives in Orleans Indiana with her husband Matt of almost 20
years and their two teenage sons Harrison and Pete. They enjoy a quiet life on their little farm with their pygmy goats, donkey, ducks, potbelly pig and dogs.

| | DEADLINE JUNE 10, 2018 - $3000 in Awards NYC4PA Call for Entry - HUMANS Contests, Juried Art Shows
- Photography Art Organization Art history is filled with images of HUMANS that have changed our lives and changed our minds. Painting, sculpture, works on paper and now photography have engaged us in our own reflection. Photography, the most accessible medium, shows us our humanity through traditional portraiture, street photography, families, events and maybe even selfies. This is not about equipment, it is about ideas and vision. We consider our various manifestations as
we see through the lens of others. Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vivian Meier - all have a unique vision of who we are. HUMANS is a call for entry for YOUR vision of who we are. Images must have people in them photographed alone, as couples or in groups. Images can be spontaneous or structured, in the street, at sporting events or celebrations. This call for entry is about how you see yourself and/or the people around you. Captured traditionally or by alternative
process, cell phone or film, the possibilities are endless.

| | DEADLINE JUNE 11, 2018 - $500 in Awards Art Call: Shades of Green 2018 Online Event - Calls for Submissions -
Acrylic, Digital Media, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Online Gallery Twenty artists will be selected for this new online group exhibit "Shades of Green 2018." The exhibit and its participating artists will be extensively marketed worldwide to over 26,000 people, including art buyers, gallery owners, curators, and collectors. One artist will be selected to receive the "Christopher E. Burke Fine Art Grant" of $500.00. This artist's
creation will become the exhibition image and will be used on the invitation, video title screen, and all online marketing pertaining to the exhibit. In addition, the grant recipient will have a dedicated marketing campaign about their art and accomplishments sent to over 26,000 recipients worldwide. The artist will also be featured in the Art Market Newsletter. Participants must be 18 years of age or older working in any still medium, including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, digital
art, and collage. "Shades of Green 2018" Our curators for this new exhibit are looking for art that focuses on color, that is, a subject enhanced, here, by the use of the color green, in particular. The extent of this application to the composition is not a consideration in the judging of each piece. How the color green engages the viewer to enter the artist's narrative defines these evaluations---nothing more. We look forward to receiving potential entries which capture a mood, relay a message,
or inspire a viewer to interpret the artist's work through their intuitive and perhaps methodical utilization of various green shades. All works, which can be expressed in terms of representational, expressionistic, surrealistic, or abstraction genres, are encouraged ... Online Event

| | DEADLINE JUNE 15, 2018 International Juried Photography Exhibition: THE TELLING IMAGE Calls for Submissions - Photography Art Gallery The photograph's
power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusions are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what
is being left out or left to the viewer's imagination. Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

| | DEADLINE JUNE 25, 2018 PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Portraits Without Faces Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery A juried international photography exhibition.August
9 – September 1, 2018. Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts; tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways in which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception. Numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. We usually assume that faces are necessary components of portraiture; we may, however, learn
just as much about the character, the personality of a person by looking at images that depict other parts of their bodies, show us the objects or places associated with them. Not focusing on the face may open up a new dimension of interpretation. Our Portraits Without Faces exhibition is dedicated to this challenging divergence from the more conventional approaches to the genre. Encouraged by the creative responses we received last year, PH21 Gallery invites photographers again to submit their
work for a group exhibition themed Portraits Without Faces. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this theme, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; submissions of all kinds of portraits without faces are welcome. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

$450 in Awards MATERIAL MATTERS: Breaking with Tradition Calls for Submissions - Ceramics, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture Art Organization As an expression of culture, art is often unconventional and rebellious; experimental and insightful. Yet, art by necessity relies upon familiar
traditions to achieve its unconventional ends. This is why the better we know our traditions, the more cleverly we can break them. The annual exhibition, Material Matters, asks artists who work in a variety of traditional materials -- clay, glass, wood, metal or fiber/textile -- to consider the traditions underpinning their work and the rules and conventions they break in method or material. Artists are invited to submit original works that change traditional "ways of seeing" by demonstrating a
break with the past or suggesting a new way forward, whether toward logical or illogical conclusions. This is a national juried exhibition for artists 18 years of age or older. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. All work must be handcrafted by the artist. Mass production work and commercially manufactured pieces will not be accepted. Exhibit dates: October 6-28, 2018. JUROR: Melissa Stern is an artist and journalist. Her drawing and sculpture have been exhibited in
museums, galleries, private and corporate collections throughout the world. Early Bird submissions – June 14th - $35 for up to five (5) images. Final Deadline submissions between June 15th and July 12th-- $50 for submission of up to five (5) images. $5 for each additional image. Submissions are online only.
