Happy August from TheArtList
“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” ― Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe
We are pleased to say that the trend of exceptional artists entering the Artist of the Month contest continues. Please see our Grand Prize, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and Viewer's Choice winners showcased below. We are happy to acknowledge the following honorable mentions: Alana
Judah, Tal Dvir (who was selected as Artist of the Month in December 2015), and Tom David.
Did you know that we only feature a fraction of the calls that come into TheArtList.com in the newsletter? We post featured calls almost every day on our social media (links at the bottom of the page) but there are also many calls that come in on a daily basis that can only be found in TheArtList.com's online database.
All the best for a creative end to your summer.
Artist of the Month Contest Winners |
Artist of The Month Winner Cheryl
Gross is the Artist of the Month with her painting "Where Rules are Imposed, There Will be Pirates." She wins a $75 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Chery's Artist Statement includes the following: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Cheryl Gross is an illustrator, painter, and motion graphic artist living and working in the New York area. She is a professor at Pratt Institute and Bloomfield College. Cheryl received her BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute. The
work centers on political/social commentary that involves such issues as gender obliteration, the effect that globalization/gentrification have on our society. Given the progress of trans gendering, gender obliteration may not be too far off in the future. These topics have not been accepted until very recently and considering our present political climate, may very well be in jeopardy. In my series, The Karpland Chronicles (My Very Existence, My Life in the World, Seemed Like a Hallucination,a
quote by HarukiMurakami), mirrors our present socio-political climate and the end of American democracy, as we know it. The work has often been compared to Dr. Seuss on crack."

| | DEADLINE AUGUST 26, 2018 THEME | THE SHAPE OF THINGS Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Art Gallery
THEME | THE SHAPE OF THINGS:
The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation… an organic coordination of visual elements. – Henri Cartier-Bresson. The term composition means 'putting together' or the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole - often adhering to compositional principles that make a work of photographic art more appealing or intriguing to viewers. These principles include the development of rhythm, movement, contrast,
balance, unity, proximity and continuity to create expressive and compelling compositions – while emphasizing different visual, social, or political concepts. Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of works of art that explore composition as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic – be it pure visual formalism or in support of thematic objectives. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are
welcome for submission. Notice of Acceptance | September 10th, 2018; Exhibition Dates | September 28th – October 17th, 2018.

| | DEADLINE AUGUST 27, 2018 PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Punctum Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition.October 11 – November 3, 2018. Roland Barthes in his Camera Lucida famously introduced the concept punctum in opposition with studium. Studium refers to the
manifest content of the photograph that is responsible for creating interest in the image, and we may be interested in the subject of photographs for all sorts of reasons. However, it is only images with punctum that capture our attention for the sake of their formal photographic qualities, regardless of their depicted content. It is a detail of the image that sharply captures our attention, attracts us to the photograph and makes it stand out of the thousands of other photographs we encounter.
It is a formalist condition, and discovering the presence of punctum in an image depends on the searching eye of the spectator. Thus punctum is regarded as a highly subjective notion by many, while others may argue that there could be objective ways of demonstrating the presence of punctum in some works. It is likely among the most challenging tasks for a photographer to create images with punctum, but this is precisely what we are looking for in this exhibition.PH21 Gallery invites
photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Punctum. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this topic and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The topic is broadly construed, as the presence of punctum is independent of generic or stylistic constraints.

Art-Competition.net is proud to announce the Art Call "Flowers Plants and Gardens 2018." There will be 7 Winners and 10 Honorable Mentions. This competition is open
to all artists and photographers worldwide. The participant must be 18 years of age or older working in any still art medium, including: painting, drawing, collage, photography, digital art, and fiber art. (12:00 Midnight EST) Jury Selection: on or before September 7, 2018. Artist Notification: on or before Sept 12, 2018. Our "Flowers, Plants & Gardens"
curators are looking for art work that honors and reflects the beauty and calm dignity of nature as it is expressed in flowers and plants. Artists and photographers throughout history have created some of their most beautiful, memorable works of art through their appreciations of inspiring flowers, plants, and gardens that symbolize continual rebirth, fresh beginnings, fragile persistence, and alluring symmetry against many odds. Regardless of art form, when an artist becomes "blocked," nature
frequently offers him or her a new spiritual foundation and motivation. Be it a single flower, a garden in full aromatic bloom, or a "shy" plant on a window sill, there is no mistaking the awesome complexity of the planet's precious vegetation. This abundance of flowers and greenery inspires and challenges the creative mind to redefine and/or simply glorify their splendor. Online Event

Art is a
powerful tool to evoke social change. Without uttering a single word, artists can enlighten, educate and affect change around the world. Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences has used the power of art and prose to promote diversity. One way we accomplish this is through our annual international art exhibition in Sarasota's Bayfront Park. The juried exhibit consists of 45 billboard-size images, each work of art is created by local, national and international artists reflecting their
interpretation of our theme "enriching lives through diversity and inclusion." Embracing Our Differences invites you to participate in creating a world where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. Become a part of this exciting change through your visual art submission to the annual Embracing Our Differences international juried competition. The winning artworks combine a deep understanding of both medium and message. Awards are given for "Best-in-Show Adult," "Best-in-Show
Student," and "People's Choice" categories, with the last chosen by visitors to the exhibit. Adult winners each receive $1,000; students receive $1,000 with $500 to be directed to the student and $500 to their school's art program, if they worked under the direction of an educator. The statements accompanying each artwork are also vital and provide insight into our common humanity—as well as the differences that make us all unique. In 2017, 212,000 people visited the exhibition—bringing the
total amount of visitors to 2.5 million since 2004. The exhibit will be displayed from 1-19 through 3-14 in Sarasota's Bayfront Park. Online Event
