Happy April from TheArtList

GRAND PRIZE WINNER
Our grand prize winner, Carol Tippit Woolworth wins a $75 Gift Certificate to Jerry's Artarama. She says: "Like most artists I have been creating art my entire life. In fact I just found a drawing when I was 4 years old which my mother had saved in a box. She would save the cardboards in stocking packages of the day, and I would constantly be drawing on those, and anything I could get
my hands on. One Christmas when I was around 8 years old, my Grandma sent my sister and I paint-by-numbers kits. I was hooked. It must have been an oil painting kit because every time I smell linseed oil I’m back painting at the dining room table." Read more about Carol and her work at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_04_19.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER
Corie Walker was awarded with a $50 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. Corie Len Walker is a graduate from the University of Memphis Fine Arts Program, where she concentrated in Studio Arts with a minor in Art History. Her work explores the experience of being human. Using a variety of materials such as personal treasures, recycling products, or objects from nature; she
constructs pieces from her personal narrative that strives for a “collective intimacy” with the audience. “I like the process of taking fragmented, raw, and ugly parts that when brought together create a new, whole that is quite moving and beautiful.” https://corie-walker.squarespace.com
THIRD PLACE WINNER
Douglas Despres wins third place and a $25 gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama. This photo is from his "Tobaccoland" series. Three tobacco farmers, Richer / Osmani / Alberto, rest after a long days work on a farm near the Casa del Veguero property in Viñales, Cuba. The drying tobacco leaves take about three months to fully lose their moisture. Afterwards, the leaves will be sold to the
government who will then bring the leaves into the other areas of production on their journey to become fine cigars. Cigar Journal, a respected industry publication, claims about 200 hands touch the tobacco before it is finalized for sale, showing the intimate collaboration between humans and nature. VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER
Born in Chicago, Antonia Ruppert grew up watching her father draw after coming home from work. The father of five(her youngest brother yet unborn), he would use a pencil and eraser to relax and create. Ruppert was highly influenced by seeing her dad create night after night. Hence, she was around seven years old when she copied Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci. It was done from her
mother’s medical book. Her mother shrieked when she found her on the living room floor sketching the nude drawing. Ruppert’s fascination with creating was fully hatched in that moment. Her fascination with art was borne from other moments as well. For example, in her painting “Genesis of an Artist,” Ruppert shares how her grandparent’s lives produced future generations of artists. With her grandfather’s love for drink, the neighborhood and his family along with her
grandmother’s spirituality, gardening and “home economics” sentimentality, Ruppert and her family were inspired to create poetry, art and music. In conclusion, Ruppert’s family has watched her sustain her artistic practice for 20+ years. An artistic practice that began from watching her father create, has transformed into a way life. DEADLINE APRIL 15, 2019
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: The Shape of Things
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition.May 9 – June 1, 2019. Objects in our visual environment come in many forms and photographers are often intrigued by the shape of things. In some photographic genres the images of things have a simple, depictive function; they are merely part of a complex image that may consist of several recognizable objects but their shape is not significant in the overall composition of the image. At the other end of the spectrum, abstract photography
concentrates on shapes and forms for their own sake up to a point when we can no longer recognise the objects themselves. Between being either insignificant or the only significant element, the shape of recognisable things may also be the driving compositional component of an image. That is, the shape of things may be of central importance to the composition of photographs not only in abstract photography but also in other genres. These images capture our attention and stand out for their
creative form. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed The Shape of Things. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; we are looking for photographs in which the shape of things is a significant compositional element, including abstract photography. Indeed, we are
interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.
