💕 Happy February From TheArtList 💕
“Art is standing with one hand extended into the universe and one hand extended into the world, and letting ourselves be a conduit for passing energy."
- Albert Einstein
February is here and a cold winter is in full swing across most of the country. According to Punxsutawney Phil, we should be treated to an early spring this year, so now is a good time as any to hunker down and tap into your inner creativity. This month we have a great variety of opportunities for you to choose. From portrait themed exhibits to realism, wildlife, ceramics, photography and more. Take the time to check them all out.
Oh, and be sure to buy your Valentine some art this year. It lasts longer than chocolate!
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a fantastic and creative February!
GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
Nancy Bass's ongoing series of museum paintings unites her long-standing engagement with animal subjects and art-historical tradition. Her work has been inspired by the thirty-five years that she lived on a farm, raising and painting a herd of cows who were central to her own everyday landscape. The playful juxtaposition of bovine subject and icons of American Art reflects her larger interest in exploring color, texture, and the boundary between nature and culture. See more of
her work and read her AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_02_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
HARI LUALHATI is an ARTIST (Painter, Illustrator, Graphic Artist, Designer) born in Philippines and obtained a Degree in Fine Arts in University of the Philippines, Diliman year 2006 (Cum Laude). Hari is now based in Cape Town, South Africa. Visit Hari's website to see more of her work at: http://harilualhati.yolasite.com
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
Richard Herring paints and draws from his modest home studio on the coast of California, deriving absolutely no inspiration from the broad Pacific at his door. Using bright, simple palettes he creates worlds of imagination and whimsy, tapping into an alternate dimension where cats are buttholes and Ramona can fly.Visit Richard's website to see more of her work at: https://iwillbuyyoualeek.wixsite.com/iwillbuyyoualeek
VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER:
Our viewer's choice winner is Vicki Garner. Vicki’s work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions and galleries in New Jersey, Alabama and Tennessee and is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. DEADLINE FEBRUARY 10, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: CorpoRealities
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
The human body, in full or in part, is often in the focus of various photographic genres. From documentary, event and street photography to fashion photography and the nude, photographers have always found ways of constructing images in which the specific portrayal of the human body gains significance. This may be stemming from the rich layers of meanings determined and shaped by the specific socio-cultural context of the image, the visual interaction of the human body with the surrounding
physical space, or the intriguing compositional possibilities offered by the body itself. When focussing on the body, some photographers explore movements, study expressive gestures and postures, or concentrate on the beauty and details of the human anatomy. Some narrate whole life stories through the depiction of the human body. Others may offer stern visual criticism of our normative conceptions of the human body and its mainstream representation in Western media. PH21 Gallery invites
photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed CorpoRealities. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

OPEN THEME | CALL FOR ENTRIES | AN INTERNATIONAL JURIED PHOTO EXHIBITION. "When a moment in front of me appears to be particularly special, whether it be by beauty or experience, I capture it. DEADLINE MARCH 01, 2020 - $3000 in Awards
Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University Essay Prize in Photography
Calls for Submissions - Photography Other
The CDS Documentary Essay Prize honors the best in short-form documentary photography and writing in alternating years: one year, photos; one year, writing. The focus is on current or recently completed work (within the last five years). All entries must have one thing in common: evidence that they were created with reliance on documentary methods and immersive fieldwork. We are interested in work that directs its gaze outward, that curiously engages with the world, and that is, as former
CDS director Tom Rankin describes, “derived from an in-depth understanding of place, history, and the current situation, in concert with a personal relationship to the proposed work. Ultimately, the commitment is to use documentary expression to motivate the thinking and reflection of others.” The judging will be based only on the work as presented, with focus on the strength and nuance of the essay submitted as a narrative; the subject matter can be weighty or light-hearted.The competition’s
review and selection process is geared toward fairness. An entry is reviewed again (and again) if even only one panelist would like to keep it under consideration. Submissions for the 2020 CDS Documentary Essay Prize in Photography will be accepted from December 1, 2019, to March 1, 2020. The winner will be publicly announced in June 2020.
