Happy April from TheArtList!
"I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone" - Frida Kahlo
For many parts of the US (and world), April surely has come in like a lion, especially with the social distancing and shelter at home mandates related to the international COVID crisis. These are definitely scary and confusing times. However, for artists, this is also a good time to redirect your energy and creativity with more dedicated time to focus on your art.
Spring is generally a bustling time for galleries and organizations with lots of art and photo calls being submitted to TheArtList. The COVID crisis is no doubt causing a headache and hard times for many galleries, schools, workshops as events, festivals, shows, and exhibitions are being canceled and postponed. Please be sure to double check any calls that you may have entered to see about any date changes or cancelations. That said, we are still getting
lots calls are still coming in. Some are for online contests or juried exhibitions or for events that are being planned for later in the year.
Please remember that we are only able to showcase a small number of featured calls in the monthly newsletter, so be sure to check the online database by logging into our website www.theartlist.com. You can login to search for calls that match your interests.
We are thrilled to recognize a few fantastic artists who submitted their work to our monthly art contest in April: 1st Place: Kim Roberts, 2nd Place: Tami Tsark, 3rd Place: Tom Swimm, and most audience votes Viewer's Choice: Patricia Boes.
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a safe and creative April.
GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
Kim Roberts. While earning a Master’s degree in Psychology from Naropa University Kim developed an obsession with Ashtanga yoga and Buddhist meditation. She spent the better part of 15 years living in South and Southeast Asia leading retreats offering contemplative practice, psychology and creative process as tools for personal growth. She maintains a small private practice of online counseling clients and educational programs. She is the author of two books: Ashtanga Yoga for Beginner’s
Mind and Toward a Secret Sky: Creating Your Own Modern Pilgrimage. Kim's work is represented by galleries in Denver and Breckenridge. Kim divides her time between Crestone and Denver, Colorado. See more of her work and read her AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_04_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
Tami S. Tsark is an instructor, a painter, and a media producer. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. From her background as a competitive ice skater, she infuses motion into her imagery. Themes that are of most interest are dream-states, persistent knowledge and/or the transfer of emotion from historical or perceived events to new hosts. Plainly put, she loves to incorporate reclaimed objects and complex
surfaces and explore their new affect using video or paint. View Tami's online portfolio.
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
Tom Swimm. A professional artist for over 35 years, Tom is based in Laguna Beach, California and exhibits in numerous art galleries and Art Festivals around the country. Inspired by the light and landscape of Laguna, he renewed his passion for painting and was accepted for his first exhibition in the Festival Of Arts in 1988. His paintings soon became recognizable for their exceptional use of light and color -- a style that he continues to develop with each new
work. Visit Tom's website to see more of his work at: https://tomswimmfineart.com

DEADLINE APRIL 13, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Silence
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. May 7 – 30, 2020. Silence is always conceived against its opposites; sound, noise, loudness. Silence is strongly associated with loneliness and alienation, the unknown and disturbing landscape on the one hand, and the known tranquillity and peace on the other hand. Photographically, the contrast between deep darkness and dazzling light is also decisive. After natural or social catastrophes, everything falls silent; empty cities, villages,
abandoned public transport and empty workplaces remind us for the transience and fragility of humankind. Silence is accompanied by quiet activities such as contemplation and meditation, which negate the very nature of action itself. Silence is also often present in still lifes, cityscapes, portraits, and many other photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for our group exhibition themed Silence. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who would
like to share their silence experiences with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

DEADLINE MAY 15, 2020 - $10000 in Awards
Center for Documentary Studies Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize
Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Digital Media, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Photography, Video/Film Other
First announced in 1990, the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize was created by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in documentary studies. The
Lange-Taylor Prize is intended to support artists, working alone or in teams, who are engaged in extended, ongoing fieldwork projects that fully exploit the relationship of words and images in the powerful, persuasive representation of a subject. The prize is not awarded for completed projects or to support the production of a book, exhibit, website, or other outcomes. All entries should have one thing in common: evidence that they were created with reliance on documentary methods—research and
interviews—and immersive, long-term fieldwork. We are interested in work that directs its gaze outward, that curiously engages with the world, and that is, as former CDS director Tom Rankin describes, “derived from an in-depth understanding of place, history, and the current situation, in concert with a personal relationship to the proposed work." The winner receives $10,000, features in Center for Documentary Studies’ digital publications, and inclusion in the Archive of Documentary Arts at
Rubenstein Library, Duke University.
