Happy May from TheArtList!
“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing–and keeping the unknown always beyond you.” ~ Georgia O’Keeffe
Spring is always a busy time for galleries and lots of art and photo calls are being submitted to TheArtList. This year, even with the major disruption to the art world from COVID-19, we are still seeing lots of great calls coming in for events and exhibitions that are farther out in the year. Many galleries have also transitioned to online events for the time being which is a good thing.
Please remember that we are only able to showcase a small number of calls in the monthly newsletter, so be sure to check the online database on our website www.theartlist.com. You can login to search for calls that match your interests.
This month we are thrilled to recognize a few fantastic artists who submitted their work to our monthly art contest: 1st Place: N. Carlos J., 2nd Place: Linda Schroeter, 3rd Place: Carol Sabo, and most
audience votes Viewer's Choice: Moh'd Khatib. Just the other day I realized that we have been hosting a free contest each month since 2007. This has been an amazing experience to see all of the great work being submitted over the years and also being able to give out some wonderful gift card awards from JerrysArtarama.com. Be sure to go enter this
month's contest : https://woobox.com/p7nu8c
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a fantastic and creative May.
GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
N. Carlos J. is a New York City visual artist based in New York, who employs painting, illustration and drawing elements within his works. His works range from smaller multiples to large scale murals in the public forum. His work explores the emotional response, new forms of slavery, the tormented soul, and the language of corrupted thought. His work also sheds light to the subconscious conversations we have behind the mask worn. He disconnects the painted image from the common
experience and perception of the viewer to enable the creation of new figurations and experiences. To create these complex images, he blurs the lines between the imposed disciplines of the art world such as painting, illustration, and drawing to disrupt the concepts of what is considered high and low-brow art. See more of his work and read his AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_04_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
Linda Schroeter."My paintings often depict birds or animal objects sourced by humans such as furs and shells. I paint from my life’s personal experience often using metaphor to convey a message to the viewer through intellectual interpretation and discovered meaning. Oil is my medium I practice studied Classical painting methods of the renaissance. Using light manipulation through paint layers, pushing forms and elements to create the sense of three-dimensional space." Visit
Linda's website to see more of her work at: https://www.lindaschroeter.com
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
Carol Sabo has been a professional artist for over 50 years, mastering calligraphy, watercolors and now acrylics. Carol studied at the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, and took many private classes but she considers herself a self taught artist. Like most artists she always strives for perfection. She was influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe but soon developed her own style. Using lots of detail, bright, bold colors and sometimes a touch of humor, has won her many awards. She
continues to win awards today. Visit Carol's website to see more of her work at: http://www.csabo.com/
VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER:
Moh'd Khatib is an award-winning multi-disciplined graphic and type designer from Amman, Jordan. He is also the designer of the sans typeface family Sahar Sans. You can see more of his work at: https://www.instagram.com/l_ella7/

DEADLINE APRIL 13, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Silence
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. May 7 – 30, 2020. Silence is always conceived against its opposites; sound, noise, loudness. Silence is strongly associated with loneliness and alienation, the unknown and disturbing landscape on the one hand, and the known tranquillity and peace on the other hand. Photographically, the contrast between deep darkness and dazzling light is also decisive. After natural or social catastrophes, everything falls silent; empty cities, villages,
abandoned public transport and empty workplaces remind us for the transience and fragility of humankind. Silence is accompanied by quiet activities such as contemplation and meditation, which negate the very nature of action itself. Silence is also often present in still lifes, cityscapes, portraits, and many other photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for our group exhibition themed Silence. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who would
like to share their silence experiences with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

NYC4PA FROM A SEED - A WORLD OF BOTANICALS
Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Photography Art Organization
Growing up in NYC each of us had the opportunity to experience the wonderful world of botanicals at both the New York and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. We had the opportunity to develop an early appreciation for the variety of life that starts with a seed, much of it in spectacular greenery and flowers bursting with color. Though seeds can be tiny and come in an envelope at the nursery, large and found in the center of a fruit, or black and found in a watermelon; they all hold the promise to
become glorious botanicals. With spring approaching in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern, capture your unique view of favorite flowers, trees in bloom, variegated leaf patterns, vines etc. in gardens, at the beach, on your window sill, or in the rain forest.

DEADLINE MAY 15, 2020 - $10000 in Awards
Center for Documentary Studies Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize
Online Event - Calls for Submissions - Digital Media, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Photography, Video/Film Other
First announced in 1990, the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize was created by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in documentary studies. The
Lange-Taylor Prize is intended to support artists, working alone or in teams, who are engaged in extended, ongoing fieldwork projects that fully exploit the relationship of words and images in the powerful, persuasive representation of a subject. The prize is not awarded for completed projects or to support the production of a book, exhibit, website, or other outcomes. All entries should have one thing in common: evidence that they were created with reliance on documentary methods—research and
interviews—and immersive, long-term fieldwork. We are interested in work that directs its gaze outward, that curiously engages with the world, and that is, as former CDS director Tom Rankin describes, “derived from an in-depth understanding of place, history, and the current situation, in concert with a personal relationship to the proposed work." The winner receives $10,000, features in Center for Documentary Studies’ digital publications, and inclusion in the Archive of Documentary Arts at
Rubenstein Library, Duke University.
