Happy August from TheArtList!
“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”
― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a fantastic and creative August.
GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
Mindy Z. Colton. Award-winning Florida artist, Mindy Z. Colton, originally from New York City, was classically trained in all the traditional arts. Her love of sculpture is where she has found her greatest artistic satisfaction and success. Involved with horses her entire life, she chose to combine her passion for both art and horses in her unique sculptural works. She seeks to not just replicate an image of a horse, but to explore the energy, expression and beauty of horses. Much of
her inspiration comes from nature and frequent travels to the west.See more of her work and read her AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_08_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
Chuck Jones. Despite having invested heavily in developing some facility in the world of words, first as a literature major and later as a clinical psychologist, I’ve long recognized I will never be able to write the novel I want to read. By contrast, in the world of water media, I’ve discovered how, by approaching my efforts with receptive curiosity, I can create images I want to view and patterns that, somehow, feel meaningful to me. So, that’s where I’m now devoting my
energy, later in life. Doing so makes every morning I awake to walk into the studio a day worth … walking into the studio. Visit Chuck's website to see more of his work at: https://www.chuckjonesphd.com
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
George Liang was born in China and grew up in Taiwan. He majored in Metallurgy engineering in college.George showed his drawing and painting talent, since he was three. He learned oil and watercolor paintings in Taiwan, when he was a teenager. In 1970s he moved to California and worked as a Commercial Real Estate Broker for almost 30 years. During those years, he kept painting as his hobby. Since 2010 George has been semi-retired from his business and devotes most of his
time in watercolor painting. So far, he has won several awards in different local, national and international juried art competition shows in 2011. Visit George's website to see more of his work at: http://georgeliangfineart.com
VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER:
Our viewer's choice winner is Ben Moss. Ben (who also goes by PLOID) lives and works in Shreveport, Louisiana. He has exhibits, creates murals, and participates in live painting events throughout the Southeast and beyond. You can see more of his work at: https://jbenmoss.tumblr.com and https://www.mrploid.com

DEADLINE AUGUST 17, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Dis/harmony
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. September 24 – October 17, 2020. Harmony is an elusive, perhaps even ineffable aspect of photographic images. So is disharmony, its possibly disturbing, but often stimulating opposite. Although many photographers share the view that the communicative impact of images is enhanced by their harmony, there are countless individual artistic interpretations of what makes an image harmonious or disharmonious. Some consider harmony primarily as a
visual compositional feature of photographs, also allowing for the unusual, for the unexpected, or even for the disturbing when it comes to compositional harmony or disharmony. For many others, harmony is also a thematic concept, and they find harmonious elements in the communicative content of the image, arising from the various interactions depicted in the photograph. The intentional lack of harmony may also lead to most creative photographic compositions. All photographic genres use the
elements of composition to create the sense of harmony or its opposite. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for the group exhibition themed Dis/harmony. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who think that harmony or disharmony is a constitutive element in their work, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; harmony or disharmony may be present as a formal
aesthetic feature, it may be expressed visually on personal or social levels, literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Early bird deadline: August 10, 2020. Final deadline: August 17, 2020

DEADLINE AUGUST 24, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: The art of photography @ Rome
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. October 2 – 25, 2020, PH21@Rome. A PH21 Gallery Exhibition in Rome, Italy. Although photography first emerged as a technological invention, it was also quickly conceived as an artistic practice as well. Pictorialist photographs in the nineteenth century were created to look like paintings, while advocates of straight photography in the first part of the twentieth century strived for the purely photographic means of creating photographic
meanings. Street photographers devote the medium to capturing the fleeting moment, while in the last decades of the 20th century many photographers turned to staging and directing in order to utilize photography for artistic visual communication. Art photography also includes numerous genres and creative practices from portraiture, landscape and still life to abstract and conceptual photography. In this call we ask contemporary photographers to show how they understand art photography in the
21st century. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed The art of photography. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in photography as an art form and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; we welcome submissions from all artistic photographic genres and styles, including abstract compositions. We are interested in all
possible creative photographic interpretations of what photography as an art form might be. Please note that this PH21 Gallery exhibition will be presented in Rome.
