Happy September from TheArtList!
“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
September has arrived. Back to school and back to business, even in a partially open pandemic world. We hope that you all had a wonderful and creative summer. September brings the beginning of a new fall season with new art and photo call opportunities from TheArtList.com. It has been a tough year for many galleries and art organizations around the world. However, we are starting to see an uptick in art and photo call submissions as the fall and
2021 gallery calendars are coming together. Art lives on and will help us all get through these tough times. Please support the galleries by entering their calls and by taking advantage of any virtual events and programs that might interest you.
Please note that we are only able to showcase a small number of calls in the monthly newsletter, so be sure to check the online database on our website www.theartlist.com. You can login to search for calls that match your interests.
Each month we host a free Artist of the Month contest (see below). This gives us a chance to see all the talented and inspiring members of our community. This month, we are thrilled to recognize a few fantastic artists who submitted their work to our monthly art contest: 1st Place: Naomi Shachar , 2nd Place: Judy
Phearson, 3rd Place: Mark Macko, and most audience votes Viewer's Choice: Deana Markus.
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a fantastic and creative September.
ARTIST OF THE MONTH WINNER:
Naomi Shachar - The rigid lines of professional interior designing in which Naomi was educated upon inhibited her natural creativity and her personal inherent propensity to artistic self-expression, so she oriented her endeavors in her native Israel towards combining art with business by manufacturing and uniquely hand-painting ceramic-ware that was marketed in high-end exclusive stores around the country. Arriving in Mission Viejo CA, Naomi has further developed her artistic skills by
studying color theory and practicing drawing and painting techniques. All of which contribute to the transfer of artistic visions to the canvas and onwards to the keen eye of the art viewer. See more of her work and read her AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_09_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
Judy Phearson was born and raised in Boise, Idaho and found a passion for painting much later in life. Judy has been with Trails West Gallery in Sun Valley, ID for over 35 years. She has been featured in: Wildlife Art News, Art West Magazine, Artists USA, North Light Magazines, and Top Landscape Artist's of America. Judy was chosen as one of the top 100 artists in the Arts for Parks contest in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Visit Judy's website to see more of her work at: https://www.judyphearson.com/
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
Mark Macko is an artist based in the Tampa Bay area. He has been painting for many years and is eager to share his art with the world.
Visit Mark's website to see more of his work at:
VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER:
Deana Markus is a self-taught artist who has been seriously creating art since 2011. She began by using colored pencil and now creates in many different mediums, such as colored pencil, oils, acrylics, and pastels. You can see more of her work at:

DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 07, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Motion
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. October 22 – November 14, 2020. Photography is a medium of still images; it cannot create the illusion of motion the way in which moving images such as film, video or cartoons can. The static nature of the image itself, however, has never prevented photographers from putting motion in the centre of their endeavours. Instead of freezing the moment they often strive for capturing movement and the passing of time in a variety of ways. The
fragile moment might be broken by showing the sweeping power of motion. Capturing motion is never a mere given in photography because it is not a default option of the medium. Depicting or expressing motion is a welcome challenge for photographers; it is also the source of some of the most creative images in diverse photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Motion. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are
interested in this most intriguing topic and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed, and it is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. One juror’s choice and up to three honourable mentions will be announced. The juror’s choice receives three free entries for any upcoming themed group exhibition calls at
PH21 Gallery. (Each free entry includes up to 15 images.) Curator: Zsolt Bátori.

DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 09, 2020 - $4000 in Awards
NYC4PA STREET PHOTOGRAPHY 2020
Online Event - Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Art Organization
Vivian Maier, an unknown, left behind a treasure of images she took while walking outside on time off. Cartier-Bresson, Frank, Meyerowitz, Arbus, Evans, the list of accomplished street photographers goes on. Their work captured a special essence of life, not posed, not set up but there in the streets, yards, avenues, porches... we pass every day. Images as compelling surround us as we walk or ride in the streets of our lives. The challenge for this contest is to shoot those street images
that set them apart from snapshots. Again - opportunities abound. Take your camera or phone outside with you and capture the odd juxtaposition of a passerby and a window decoration, a special look, a special split second moment of communication, a scene that conveys a message or feeling. The examples are too numerous and varied to list. All 2D photography is welcome.

Justice
Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Museum
“Liberty and justice for all”. These are the closing words of America’s Pledge of Allegiance, but we have fallen woefully short of this promise. Words and actions have failed us, but artists step into this gap by investigating themes and imagery that inspire the path forward as well as depicting the errors of the past. As a nation, we must eliminate racism in all its forms. Art is the universal language and artists articulate a shared vision for social justice. 2D or 3D artwork will be
accepted in any medium. JUROR: Karen Jenkins Johnson. Karen Jenkins Johnson established her eponymous gallery in 1996 in San Francisco, having moved to the SF Bay Area to earn her MBA at UC Berkeley. She opened a second gallery and community project space in New York in 2005. She is a dealer of contemporary art, representing international artists working across disciplines. Karen Jenkins Johnson was featured in The New York Times Style Magazine as part of a small but influential group of black
gallerists correcting history, and was interviewed on art world diversity by AIPADexposure. She is a Museum of the African Diaspora advisor, and in 2018, was named the MoADSF Patron of the Arts. DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 28, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Significant Colour
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. November 19 – December 12, 2020. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply
because the available film or digital technology has long turned colour to be the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in black and white the same way or they would not work at all; that they are in colour is not merely a technological
given, rather, it is an integral, formative and significant aspect of their photographic meaning. We may think of these photographs as colour by significance. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Significant Colour. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in the significance of any colour in photography and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The
theme is broadly construed, as the significance of colours is independent of generic or stylistic constraints. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creati
