Happy December from TheArtList!
“To be an artist is to believe in life.” – Henry Moore
It's December and we're in the midst of the holiday season! What better inspiration for artists than food, family, and fabulous winter landscapes? We here at TheArtList hope that you will be inspired to create some wonderful works of art and that you will be able enjoy some quality time with friends and family. We'd love to see some of those pieces entered into our upcoming Artist of the Month contests (keep reading for details)! We also want to wish you the
happiest of New Years. 2020 has been a heck of a year in many ways, so bring on 2021!
Please note that we are only able to showcase a small number of calls in the monthly newsletter, so be sure to check the online database on our website www.theartlist.com. You can login to search for calls that match your interests.
Each month we host a free Artist of the Month contest (see below). This gives us a chance to see all the talented and inspiring members of our community. This month, we are thrilled to recognize a few fantastic artists who submitted their work to our monthly art contest: 1st Place: Philip Salamone, 2nd Place: Ivan Jones 3rd Place: Adriana Prat, and most audience votes Viewer's Choice: Barbara Liss. Congratulations to the winners and a big thanks to all that submitted! We look forward to seeing more of your work in our future contests!
Do you follow us on any of our social media pages? We post new calls several times a week - and occasionally some of them have a very short submission window. If you aren't following us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Pinterest, you might be missing some calls!
Wishing you a fantastic and creative December.
ARTIST OF THE MONTH WINNER:
Philip Salamone is a painter based in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Fine Arts. After studying at several prestigious art institutions in New York City for a few years, Philip moved back to his hometown to found the Atwood Atelier, an institution devoted to teaching traditional drawing and painting from life. He now teaches at both the Atwood Atelier and the University of Wisconsin - Madison. See more of
Craig's work and read his AOM interview at: https://www.theartlist.com/aom_12_20.html
SECOND PLACE WINNER:
Ivan Jones may have made a living as a veterinary surgeon in the UK, but has been a pastel artist for most of his life. He discovered his love of art when he was asked to help paint the background of a parade float when he was a boy. Now retired, Ivan feels that his understanding of animals has added a little something "extra" to his artwork. Ivan primarily works with pastels as he feels they have a great vibrancy and richness of color that is often underappreciated. Visit Ivan's
website to see more of his work at: https://ivanjonesart.co.uk
THIRD PLACE WINNER:
Adriana G. Prat was once an academically trained scientist. After moving to the USA from Argentina, a more introspective life revealed her call to become a visual artist. Her work often evokes maps, islands, or the cells of organisms, signaling that she has not abandoned her scientific past. Adriana has shown at open studios, galleries, alternative spaces, and museums in both Argentina and the greater Boston area, and through a recent residency in Iceland. Visit
Adriana's website to see more of her work at: https://www.agprat.com/
VIEWER'S CHOICE WINNER:
Barbara Liss has been an artist all her life and loves working in a variety of media. She specializes in portraiture and plein air, along with a variety of indoor subjects. Now living close to Yosemite, Barbara finds the area offers untold opportunities for growth, subjects and inspiration. Barbara also chairs Yosemite Western Artists' plein air group and attends its portrait sessions regularly. You can see more of Barbara's work at: https://yosemitewesternartists.com/member-profile/?pu=bliss

DEADLINE DECEMBER 21, 2020
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Feminine / Masculine
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. February 11 – March 6, 2021. Portrayals of femininity and masculinity are, without doubt, central to a number of art forms, photography not being an exception. The past few decades have given rise to – often heated – discussions and criticisms of past, recent, and current photographic practices for their lack of reflection on the assumptions, stereotypes, and prejudices surrounding photographic approaches to femininity and masculinity. Fine
art and commercial works alike have been critiqued for the potential consequences of their approach and presentation. Historically femininity and masculinity have been conceived, among others, as oppositions, as complements of each other, or as positions on a continuum. There are hardly any ways of portraying femininity and masculinity that would or could not be considered trivial, conservative, pretentious, demeaning, distasteful, clichéd or even offensive by some. It often seems that
everything has been both said and photographed about this subject, and yet, it is not possible to ignore the persistence of the theme in our contemporary visual culture. What is it that we can still value and possibly revive from the rich history of photography; are there any novel ways left to approach this subject with a fresh critical eye? PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Feminine / Masculine. We are looking for submissions from all
photographers who are interested in this subject and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery.

DEADLINE JANUARY 11, 2021
PH21 Gallery - Call for Entries: Personality: Contemporary Portraiture
Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery
A curated international photography exhibition. March 11 – April 3, 2021. Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts, and the tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways by which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception; numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. Today we live in an
exciting new era for portraiture. There has never been a time in human history when so many portraits and self-portraits were produced day after day as in the era of digital technologies. Photographers have responded to the cultural, social and technological changes by reinterpreting the age-old genre of portraiture, and it is always an exciting and rewarding task to organize an exhibition for some of the recent achievements in the field. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work
for a group exhibition themed Personality: Contemporary Portraiture. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this genre, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; from traditional fine art portraits to selfies, people may be portrayed in countless unique ways. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.
