ARTIST OF THE MONTH WINNER
Carolyn Beehler is a Southern California native but grew up in the South. She’s nestled amongst Tennessee’s thirty-one shades of green thanks to its fifty-one shades of gray sky. Carolyn attended art school and earned a degree in design. She specializes in a form of collage work she calls "paper painting" to create amazing pieces of art that look like oil paintings until you take a closer look. Her dream studio is
being built somewhere in Istanbul. She’s never been, but sign her up to any place that she can grab baklava to go and get lost. Check out Carolyn's Featured Artist of the Month page here:
SECOND PLACE WINNER
Ewen MacDonald works in watercolour and acrylic. Many of his paintings are inspired by the lives of men working with their hands in small-scale industry. His work in watercolour focuses on the objects and scenes from their work and the texture of their lives. His acrylics on wood are currently continuing his watercolour explorations of texture and shape through a different medium branching out into abstract work. The city of Istanbul is host to most of the
exhibitions Ewen has been a part of. He has exhibited with the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Galleries London and also with the Royal Watercolour Society. See more of Ewen's art here : https://www.emacdonaldwatercolours.com/
THIRD PLACE WINNER
Soumen Saha lives and works in West Bengal, India. A mixture of sharp and blurred outlines, almost invisible brushstrokes and strong shadows and highlights give form to Soumen Saha's nature landscapes. The colours blend together in the canvas in almost hypnotic patterns, forming sand, clouds, water or sky wherever it is needed. Soumen received a degree in Fine Arts from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, and has participated in many National and
International shows organized by renowned art galleries and star hotels in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bangladesh, Singapore, Dubai, and England. See more Soumen's work here:
VIEWER'S CHOICE
Iuliana Barbu grew up and trained as a painter in Romania, but produced most of her works in Canada. She emigrated to Canada in 2000 and since then has painted with great delight whatever inspires her. Her Viewer's Choice selection, entitled "Waves", has dimensions of 120cm x 74cm and is made of acrylic using the pointillist style. Iuliana's goal in this piece was to catch the
roar of the water and restore the volume of the waves.
Water is part of Iuliana's existence and has always fascinated her. She was born on the shores of the Danube River, grew up on the shores of the Black Sea, and now lives and creates art on the shores of Lake Ontario.. See more of Iuliana's awesome art here: https://www.artmajeur.com/iulianabarbu

PH21 Gallery – Call for Entries: Portraits Without Faces
A curated international photography exhibition. September 23 – October 16, 2021. Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts; tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways in which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception. Numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. We usually assume that faces
are necessary components of portraiture; we may, however, learn just as much about the character, the personality of a person by looking at images that depict other parts of their bodies, show us the objects or places associated with them. Not focusing on the face may open up a new dimension of interpretation. Our Portraits Without Faces exhibition is dedicated to this challenging divergence from the more conventional approaches to the genre. See links below for details.

PH21 Gallery – Call for Entries: The art of photography @ Barcelona
A curated international photography exhibition. August 23–29, 2021, PH21@Barcelona. Although photography first emerged as a technological invention, it was also quickly conceived as an artistic practice as well. Pictorialist photographs in the nineteenth century were created to look like paintings, while advocates of straight photography in the first part of the twentieth century strived for the purely photographic means of creating photographic meaning. Street photographers devoted the
medium to capturing the fleeting moment, while in the last part of the twentieth century many photographers turned to staging and directing in order to utilize photography for artistic visual communication. Art photography also includes numerous genres and creative practices from portraiture, landscape and still life to abstract and conceptual photography. In this call we we ask contemporary photographers to show how they understand photography as a fine art practice in the twenty first
century.

PH21 Gallery – Call for Entries: Significant Colour
A curated international photography exhibition. October 21 – November 13, 2021. There are two kinds of photographs with respect to the significance of their use of colours. On the one hand, ever since colour film technology became widely available, colour has become the default in most photographic practices. That is, some photographs are in colour not because their colours bear some special significance (compared, for instance, to their possible black and white counterparts) but simply
because the available film or digital technology has long turned colour to be the common method of capturing photographic images. We may think of these photographs as colour by default. On the other hand, colours are often central to the meaning of photographs for their emphatic, symbolic, psychological, social, compositional, etc. significance. These photographs would not work in black and white the same way or they would not work at all; that they are in colour is not merely a technological
given.
