Happy February from TheArtList.com!

The heart is a museum, filled with the exhibits of a lifetime's loves. ~Diane Ackerman

February is here and a cold winter is in full swing across most of the country. According to our fellow groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, there are at least six more weeks until spring so now is a good time as any to hunker down and tap into your inner creativity.

This month we have a great variety of opportunities for you to choose. From portrait themed exhibits to realism, wildlife, ceramics and more. Take the time to check them all out. You'll be glad that you did! Oh, and be sure to buy your Valentine some art this year. It lasts longer than chocolate!

TheArtList is now on Google+ and Pinterest!

We are excited to finally be up and running on Google+ and Pinterest. Yes, I know we are a little behind, but we are very excited to expand and reach artists and photographers on these platforms. We love Facebook and Twitter, but increasingly we are finding artists and photographers are using more Google+ and Pinterest as well, so you can now connect with us in a few other areas. If you have a Google+ or Pinterest account, please be sure to follow us!

My Life as a Dog - Photography Exhibition

Calls for Submissions - Photography Photo Gallery

This month 1650 Gallery welcomes your artistic take on the theme My Life as a Dog Photography Exhibition. Dogs -- what gives? Furry interlopers of mind and spirit, loveable self-centered freeloaders; they want all your food, but do they ever share theirs with you? No! Backseat drivers! Smiley connivers!! Dumpster divers!!! Why do we love them so? Our protectors -- deep down we fear them, because they can so easily destroy us if they don't like us. Smarter than us -- they can sniff your birthday cake and create a hierarchical list of ingredients in their head. Best of all, they smell good and love you even when you smell bad. Dogs don't mind. They only ask one thing; be nice. And keep their water bowl clean and full. Oh, and feed them twice a day. Oh, and a nice walk in the morning. And one in the evening. Maybe some ball playing in the park or frisbee at the beach in between? Perhaps some wrestling and play-biting after dinner? Oh, and a ride in the car would be nice! Who's your date—can I come? Does she like dogs? This month 1650 goes whole hog into the wonderful world of dogs. Say it loud, say it proud. And make it real. Because the dog knows when you are afraid...

International Call for Entry Mobile Photo

Contests, Juried Art Shows - Photography Photo Gallery

Mobile phones, like Apple and Android, have become an increasingly popular for photographers, allowing for fast, fun and easy processing of images. This mobility helps keep our eyes sharp and minds visually and actively aware of the world around us. Tapping into your own creative spirit is, first and foremost, a matter of developing awareness. This awareness allows you to bring together information and material, expand your mind, quiet the senses, and allows the unconscious to reveal rich imagery. These devices are not only a powerful tool for documenting your life through single imagery, but also an excellent means of creating stunning layered composite images. In the course of taking these spontaneous photos, see both the pictures that present themselves to you, and those that emerge when you combine several seemingly insignificant images. Strive to develop the courage to ignore your inner critics and follow your own visions. Explore the process of letting go and allow your creativity to reveal stories to us—meaningful and personal through single imagery or composites --- all with our Mobile Phones!

DEADLINE MARCH 10, 2014 - $3000 in Awards

Wide Open 5

Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Digital Media, Fiber, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Mixed media, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor Art Organization

We are excited to announce our fifth annual national juried art show, Wide Open 5 and its prestigious juror—Paulina Pobocha, Curatorial Assistant in the Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art. With her direction, we look forward to a really awesome show. $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded including $1000 Best in Show. The exhibit runs April 26 - June 1, 2014. The broad theme of "Wide Open 5" encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love—wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open—but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite—wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looks to explore this idea of "wide open" in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche. Ours is a truly unique gallery—a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. Its enormous space affords us the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and we welcome it. We will be using 8,000 square feet for this show, and look forward to exhibiting artist's work from all around the country, work in all sizes, subjects, and media, except film (it's almost completely wide open). This call for submissions is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and3D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution.

Valley View, Yosemite Trails, Currents, and Visions

Calls for Submissions - Acrylic, Ceramics, Crafts, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Mosaic, Graphic Design, Drawing/Illustration, Jewelry, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Watercolor, Video/Film Art Organization

A juried exhibit focused on Yosemite National Park, in particular Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, the regions designated as protected by the Yosemite Grant in 1864. The show will feature works that address the history, present state, and possibly future of Yosemite National Park. Works will address historical subjects, current issues, and predictions or speculations on the future of the Park, including folklore or mythology. Yosemite's magnificent waterfalls, granite escarpments, and redwood forests have earned the park a reputation as one of the most spectacular natural areas on earth. Yosemite draws visitors from all over the world, and has inspired artists, writers, and the public for nearly two centuries. Ultimately it is our goal that the exhibit will shine a light on what Yosemite means to us, both as individuals and as a culture. On June 30, 1864, Congress enacted the Yosemite Grant Act, designating Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove as the first wild lands protected by the federal government for public use, and establishing Yosemite as California's first state park. In 1890, the land surrounding these two tracts was designated Yosemite National Park. Conservationist John Muir’s efforts led to combining Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove with Yosemite National Park in 1906, defining the Yosemite we know today. To learn more, visit the Yosemite Grant 150th Anniversary website. The exhibit will be on display April 5 - May 4, 2014 at Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst CA. Gallery Hours are 11 AM to 5 PM Wednesday - Monday. 559-658-8844.
