Uncommon Goods presents:

2014 Brooklyn Flag Project

Call for Artists - Deadline: July 31st, 2014

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Submit your artwork through our form below. In early August, the judging panel will meet to pick their favorites, our finalists. The finalists will be presented to our online community on the voting tool where the public will be the ultimate deciders - using their votes to determine the winner. The design with the most votes at the end of the voting period will be the grand prize winner, but our buyers will decide to work with other designers that they love.

WHAT CAN I SUBMIT?
The sky is kind of the limit with this contest except for a few conditions. Your design needs to be original - it should be designed from you and free of obvious influence from another artist. Your design also needs to be free of logos and trademarks. We know there are probably amazing coffee shops, chocolate factories, and basketball teams that represent your neighborhood, but we aren't able to accept a design with someone else's logo.

You will be asked to submit a jpg. or png. of your work, but please know, if you win, we will need a vector image of your design. So have that ready!

WHAT ARE YOUR BUYERS LOOKING FOR IN A BROOKLYN FLAG?
Although we don't have a desired aesthetic for the Brooklyn Flags, we are looking for some specific story-telling in your artwork. We want to see what makes a Brooklyn neighborhood unique - the characteristics that make it different than its adjacent hoods. This could be distinct architecture, nature, iconic landmarks, or people.

Another aspect we would love to see in a design is the acknowledgement of the history of the neighborhood. Each community in Brooklyn has a beautiful mix of old vs. new that creates a beautiful juxtaposition. These changes over time - how new residents have built up or adapted the landscape - contribute to the uniqueness and help tell the story of a neighborhood.

WHAT DO I GET IF I WIN?
If you are our grand prize winner - and let's face it, why wouldn't you be? - you'll receive $1000 cash (Ok it's a check, but you get the idea) and contract with UncommonGoods that will promise you royalties. Technically we will be buying the design off of you and giving you a cut every time it is sold, and the $1000 is an advance on the royalties you will be receiving. You'll work with our Product Development team to perfect the design and have it printed on flags. Your design will be shown on UncommonGoods.com, in our marketing emails, and possibly in the catalog. You also reserve the right for a judgment-free victory dance, literally letting your freak flag fly.

WHAT IF I DON'T WIN?
This question usually bums us out, so we are offering prizes to more than just our grand prize winner. One second place winner will receive $750, one third place winner will receive $500, and a number of other runners up will receive $250. The cash prize is an advance toward future sales, so there is the opportunity to make more as your designs are sold over time. There will be lots of victory dances in this design challenge!

I STILL HAVE A QUESTION!
