”Graffiti Canons” - Photo Contest
Call for Photographers - Deadline: October 30, 2015

My name is Robert Paterson, and I am a composer based in New York City, as well as the Artistic Director for the highly acclaimed New York City-based American Modern Ensemble. I am creating a new choral work for Volti, a choir in San Francisco, entitled Graffiti Canons. I am looking for text-based graffiti images to accompany performances of this work, either as a slide show behind the choir, or as images mounted throughout the performance space.

With this project and other works, I have been interested in setting unconventional texts, and working with artists from other disciplines. The text for Graffiti Canons will be based on aphorisms found in graffiti, and in particular, quotes, sayings, sentences or other texts (but not just single words or names) that would be considered graffiti. NOTE: please do not submit purely graphic images, or photos of graffiti that are not viewable by the public (meaning, no sketches of graffiti in a notebook, for example). Photos falling outside these guidelines will be immediately disqualified.

The chosen images will be approved and mounted on the application site for viewers to vote. Images with the most votes will have the best chance of winning.

Winning images will be compiled into a slide show and/or a video that will be shown along with performances of the choral work. Each photo will include a caption with the name of the photographer. Please do not submit purely graphic images or texts that contain profanity. Graffiti may be from any country or state, from any time period, and in any language. The more diverse, the better. If the text is not in English, please include a translation.

Winners will need to sign a letter of agreement allowing the chosen photo to be used for all artistic and promotional purposes associated with this choral work. Photos must be original photos taken by the artist, but the graffiti does not need to be by the photographer.

IMPORTANT: please submit images that are 300dpi and at least 8X10. Smaller images may be acceptable, but larger images are strongly recommended.

There may be an optional gallery showing of the images at a later date, in which case each artist will be asked to display their work during the exhibition. Exhibited works may be sold by the artist, details TBD.

There is no fee to enter, and you may enter one image per day until the deadline.

DEADLINE: October 30, 2015, 11:59 PM
