The San Diego Museum of
Art Artists Guild is proud to present En
Plein-Air, A Charles Reiffel Tribute 2013, an international art
competition. You are cordially invited to join us in our celebration of
plein-air painting by entering your art in our competition. The show
will be juried by world-class art historians Martin E. Petersen and
Jean Stern.

Martin E.
Petersen was senior Curator of American Painting at the San
Diego Museum of Art 1957-1996. During his long tenure he wrote numerous
articles for publications such as "Applause Magazine", "Art of
California", "Western Art Digest", "Journal of San Diego History", and
"Southwest Art" to name a few. Among his published books are Plein Air
Painters of California: the Southland, Irvine: Westphal Publishing,
1982, chapter "San Diego Beginnings," and Plein Air Painters of
California: the Northland, Irvine: Westphal Publishing, 1986, essays
"Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937)," and "Paul Dougherty (1877-1947)”.
Jean Stern, the Executive Director of
the Irvine Museum, is a renowned authority on Californian
Impressionism. Stern has single handedly secured a national presence
for the Irvine Museum since its inception in 1993 through a series of
books, lectures, tours, video documentaries, articles, and exhibitions,
as well as securing one of the most impressive collections of
California Impressionism. In 2011, Jean Stern authored California
Light: A Century of Landscapes in collaboration with the California Art
Club. Many of the popular Plein Air artists in the Arroyo Seco during
the early 20th Century, including William Wendt and William Lees
Judson, appear in this collection.

Entry
Guidelines
ELIGIBILITY AND
RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists. All
forms of oil painting, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel and drawing
are eligible. Artwork submitted is to be painted En Plein-Air which
includes all interpretations and portrayals of outdoor scenes. Work
must be framed or gallery wrapped, suitable for display and must not
exceed 30” x 40” including frame. Any work that does not match the
digital image in quality or content will be rejected from the
exhibition.
ENTRY FEES: The entry fee is $35.00 for
one artwork and $10 for each additional artwork; Artist Guild member’s
entry fee is $25 for one artwork and $5 for each additional work.
Submittal is by digital JPG image files.
DEADLINE: Entry fees & Artwork
must be submitted no later than January 11, 2013.
NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified
of acceptance January 21, 2013. Results will be posted at:
www.sdmaag.org/plein_air_results. Notification will be made via email
and by posting on the results page.
