‘Vanna
Migliorin’ COMEL Award for Contemporary Art 2013
Call for Artists - Deadline:
December 31st, 2012
CO.ME.L,
acronym for Commercio Metalli Latina (Metal Trading Latina),
established in 1968, has become a leader in the field of trading and
processing semi-finished aluminium metal products. The ‘Vanna
Migliorin COMEL Award for Contemporary Art’, is dedicated to
the loving memory of Vanna Migliorin who was the beating heart of the
company. This award celebrates her great passion for art, her ability
to communicate and her enthusiasm in supporting new projects – even the
most innovative ones. She saw CO.ME.L. as more than just as a
commercial enterprise and broadened its activities to include those
within a social and cultural context.
The Award aims at drawing attention to the creative potential of
aluminium through an investigation of its expressive, aesthetic, and
communicative qualities. CO.ME.L. has also joined the initiative AMACI
“Business with Contemporary Art”1 to explore ways to create and support
relationships between business and contemporary art.
The first edition of the “‘Vanna Migliorin’ COMEL Award for
Contemporary Art” (referred to as “COMEL Award”) took place on February
2012. Thirteen Italian artists participated. The event attracted a
numerous public who showed great interest.
With the intention of achieving even greater public involvement the
‘COMEL Award 2013’ is extending an invitation to artists throughout the
European Union and may well be a model for the development of an
international award in 2014. Participation is open not only to artists
who have already created an
artwork that follows the requirements of the COMEL Award, but also to
those artists whose creativity is stimulated by the idea of working in
aluminium. Submissions may include a written intention of a project to
develop and complete for participation in the competition.
1 The project AMACI “Business with Contemporary Art” aims to create a
network of companies that have the same interest in supporting the
value of contemporary art in Italy, so as to transmit knowledge,
experiences and ideas, according to the principle of sharing that
inspires AMACI.
Why Aluminium?
Aluminum is one-third
the weight of steel. It can be forged, shaped,
and laminated until obtaining a very thin foil. Visually intriguing,
aluminium does not require any particular final treatment. Its surface
offers the possibility to apply a vast range of coatings, from paint to
colored anodizations. Aluminum is easy to recycle, with an energy cost
equal to one-twentieth of that necessary in its first casting.
One-third of the aluminium, which is in use today, is made by recycling
scrap metals.
Why 13 artists?
Because aluminum is the
chemical element of atomic number 13.
